Players' rate

I sometimes notice people connecting to servers with a 40000 or 50000 rate. Though I thought the max rate could only be 30000, when connection type is set to "LAN". Do you know what other parameters than connection type can have an influence on a player's rate ?

But the real question is : if I force the players' rate to the maximum possible value, and they actually have a low connection speed, is there a risk of messing something in their game or making the server lag ?

Lag is more likely to come from too many people connecting at too high a rate, overwhelming things. This is not so likely on a LAN. But then again, who has a slow connection on a LAN? Setting sv_maxrate sets a maximum, not a minimum so your slower connections should not be harmed or cause problems.

I suspect that what gets logged is the connection rate the client is requesting, not necessarily what they are getting. Don't know this for sure. That would explain how a client is listed with a higher rate than what the sv_maxrate is set to.

Hope that helps.
