An FPS Server guide for developers
It's not rocket science and to be honest, most if not all of these features have been around for some time. However we keep seeing new games released, with a lot of these basic features missing.

Frostbite 2.0 will be DX10 and 11 Only
Jul 31, 2010 - 11:41 PM - by Misnomer
Just posted over on the BC2 forums, DICE developers have begun announcing on Twitter that BF3 will not support Windows XP or DX9. This is to take advantage of the efficiencies in DX10/11 and 64 Bit processing. See below:

Retailer Lists "Hardened" and "Prestige" Versions of CoD: Black Ops

Retailer Lists "Hardened" and "Prestige" Versions of CoD: Black Ops

Listings have since been pulled, but Activision only says they haven't yet made any announcements

Is Activision planning to release elaborate "Hardened" and "Prestige" editions of Call of Duty: Black Ops, just as they did for Modern Warfare 2 last year? Quite possibly, as IGN reports online retailer Buy.com briefly listed both versions before quickly pulling the listings from the site. While the listings no longer exist, IGN says Buy.com had the Hardened version priced at $79.99, and the ultimate Prestige version priced at $149.99, although there were no details on what these versions would supposedly include. When asked for comment, Activision wouldn't confirm or deny the existence of the deluxe versions, with a representative only saying that "we haven't made any announcements to date."

You will of course recall that the Prestige version of Modern Warfare 2 last year included no less than a real, working pair of night vision goggles, which certainly sets a high bar for whatever items a Prestige version of Black Ops may include. If Activision does indeed release such a deluxe version for the game, we can only hope the bonus item is a Vietnam-era flamethrower. Or at the very least a KA-BAR knife?

EA issuing pre-order refunds for Battlefield 1943 PC, release date still unknown

Quote:
Yesterday, it was reported EA was issuing refunds to those who pre-ordered Battlefield 1943 on PC.

Today, we received confirmation from EA it is indeed issuing refunds to those who request it.

According to a source close to Examiner, a refund was requested on a Battlefield 1943 pre-order, and customer service told the purchaser the game would be released on July 9.

However, once July 9 came and went, the user was given a “no questions asked” refund by EA.

We contacted EA to verify this, and to see if it had a date for the long-awaited PC version of the game.

This is what we were told by an EA representative: “All pre-orders can be canceled with refund at anytime and we do not have any further information at this time about a release date for the PC version of Battlefield 1943.”

Ordering Medal of Honor Limited edtion - get BF3 beta
Jul 30, 2010 - 3:59 PM - by rudedog
Yes that's what we said, Battlefield 3 beta. Lets hope this means they will build upon BF2, unlike Bad Company which was built on Bad Company the console version.

We'll bring you more info as it becomes available.
Electronic Arts Inc. today revealed new details of the Medal of Honor Limited Edition that will be released in North America on October 12, 2010. The Limited Edition features a host of weapons, powerful ammunition and camouflage. The weapons and camouflage give players a tactical gameplay advantage on day one. EA also announced today that people who own the Medal of Honor Limited Edition will receive an invitation to the beta for another highly-anticipated EA shooter, Battlefield 3™. Battlefield 3 is the latest entry in the award-winning shooter franchise from DICE in Stockholm, Sweden.

This Sunday August 1, be sure to check out an all-new Medal of Honor gameplay trailer directed by Linkin Park’s Joe Hahn. The trailer will feature all-new in-game footage set to the band’s recently-announced single ‘The Catalyst’ at www.medalofhonor.com/linkinpark. More details about the Battlefield 3 beta itself can also be found at www.medalofhonor.com/battlefield3.

Medal of Honor Limited Edition also features special content out-of-the-box including the MP-7, a weapon utilized by real-world Tier 1 Operators in the field. With its light weight, high rate of fire as well as its ability to penetrate body armor, the MP-7 handles like a pistol yet allows targets to be engaged like a rifle. The Limited Edition also includes two powerful shotguns with custom slugs. These devastating shotguns and ammunition are ideal for close-range fights.

Taken off the official Medal of Honor website.

Cease fire! After six weeks, the Medal of Honor beta will be ending for the PlayStation 3 and PC on July 31st, 2010. We at DICE appreciate all of you who took the first step toward Tier 1 and participated in the beta – your contribution is invaluable and will only help improve the final game. Unfortunately, a PC beta patch will not be released. We have implemented a number of changes and fixes, however, that will appear in the final game – many of which were originated from your feedback! Here are a few of those:

• Improved hit detection
• Breath control for all classes
• Crash fixes
• Improved control input mapping
• In-game HUD polished
• All weapon stats are now updated in the spawn menu
• Spawn points tweaked

For our Xbox fans, the battle rages on! The beta will be extended for the Xbox 360 until August 9th, 2010. Thank you to all of you for continuing to provide us with excellent feedback!

Valve Releasing Mac Graphics Code
Jul 30, 2010 - 10:26 AM - by Misnomer
Today on Gamesindustry.biz, Alec Meer reports that Valve will be releasing their OpenGl code to try and help developers with a Mac version of Steamworks enabled games. Full text below due to Gamesindustry.biz login gate:

Valve to release Mac graphics code to developers

Valve Software has revealed to GamesIndustry.biz that it will provide a portion of its graphics code to developers working on Mac OS X versions of their games.

While the helping hand will only go out to developers planning to use the Steamworks community infrastructure, Valve's business development director Jason Holtman claimed that coding for the graphics layer is "the real hard work in a making a Mac version."

The Seattle-based Left 4 Dead developer released the Mac version of Steam in May, and has been trickling out modified versions of its own titles, together with some third-party offerings, over the last few months.

In order to expedite development of OSX-compatible games, "We're going to release some of our graphics code for the GL layer," Holtman said in an interview (to be published in full next week).

"So our Steamworks partners will have access to some of the hard work that we do to get our games up on Mac, and they'll be able to incorporate that into their games - and our hope is it gets them there faster."

Holtman also revealed, for the first time, that Steam games which have seen an added Mac edition have enjoyed a significant boost in their combined platform sales.

While Valve would not be drawn on specific sales figures for the Mac versions, Holtman stated that "we're seeing between a 15 and 20 percent increase in games that have a Mac version on Steam. So some of our baseline games with added Mac versions, they're seeing quite a healthy bump in people picking up their title.

"Customers are very, very pleased because previously where they didn't have a Mac store or hadn't had distribution before, all of a sudden they're seeing some titles that are coming out."

The business director also suggested that the best way to gauge what proportion of Steam users were running it on a Mac was to keep an eye on how many Team Fortress 2 players were wearing the in-game white earbuds exclusive to the game's OS X version.
