CryEngine 3 costs $1.2 million to license

Was wondering why more developers don't use the Cry Engines more & maybe this is why...? Sure looks real purdy though....

From a DigitalBattle.com Article Link
______________

CryEngine 3 costs $1.2 million to license
On March 16th, 2012 in Industry, PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 -

CryEngine 3 reportedly costs $1.2 million to license for commercial use. We’ve seen CryEngine 3 in action, and it’s absolutely stunning, regardless what platform it’s used on. Developer Crytek had promoted the technology for a while now, and it’s been available to license to other developers. But at what price?

Anyone who applies for a CryEngine 3 has to sign a non-disclosure agreement, so it makes it hard for developers to talk about how much it costs. But DigitalBattle has received a quote from a software company working with the new engine on an unspecified commercial project, and the licensing fee for the CryEngine 3 reportedly costs $1.2 million.

Either way - the engines are amazing IMO & would have to ask - how much of a benefit is it to a developer to start on day one having a very stable, optimized, beautiful, easy to use engine to develop the game on - and thus, just have to focus on creating the world/game on it? Seems to me that would save a lot of development time/costs IMO....

Was also trying to remember correctly - but thought the fees on the ID Tech engines (up to ID Tech 4 & don't think they license 5...) is/was like $250K to start and 15% (or something similar) of total profits? Could see that possibly end up costing more than a flat $1.2M maybe...
