You young'uns will prob roll your eyes and all at this old fart, trying to play such an outdated game. But maybe one of you might help anyway.

I used to Play Tribes 1 back in 1999, I just found the disc in a box and loaded it up. Damn, I forgot how much I LOVED this game.

I have a friend who also loved the game and we tried to join some servers last night, but looks like a lot has changed since we last played. The new mods and maps and all seem SO complicated. We're nostaligic for just some basic Broadside games on plain old Renegades....y'all are probably laughing at how dated that is.

But anyway, what we'd like to do is figger out how to just set up our own little server so we can play against each other. But neither of us has a clue how to set up a Tribes server (or ANY server for that matter(. He has a laptop w/ a high speed connection and Linux at his place. Or we could use a spare PC running Windows 2000. Would either of these work? Do we need some special software or hardware or something to set up a Tribes server?

Thanks a ton to anyone who helps us old farts!

I'm not all that young myself, but I've never even played Tribes. Don't know if you've looked here, but a cursory search turned this up: http://www.planettribes.com/. You might want to give it a try, and ask your questions there.

I did check that site, extensively. They seem to have just...forgot...that everyone is a newbie once....no info there that I could find.

You happen to be in luck good sir, I pride myself in being a Tribes fanatic. There are two ways to host the server. You could host it as a dedicated server, which should be running on a standalone box, that nobody else is going to use. However, if it's just going to be the two of you, I would recommend using the second option, a listening server. This is where you actually play on and host the server from the same machine. Now, I don't have T1 installed on my work laptop, so I shall do this from memory.

Launch Tribes, go into the Multiplayer secion, and select Host Server, create server, etc.

It doesn't really matter about any of this information, as the user hosting the server will have Super Admin, and can change the map/gametype from the tab menu. All you need to verify is that the port is 28001 (I think it's in the top left of the host game options screen). You will also need your friends IP address so you can connect to him. Try www.dslreports.com/whois

Now, you need to launch tribes and open up the console (it can be opened from any screen, it doesn't matter. You open it by using the tilde (~) key. Now type in this exactly as follows:

Connect("<your friends IP>:28001");

You can'f forget the quotes or the semicolon. If you want to host a dedicated server, I can send you a config file and the shortcut needed to launch it. I also have ultra renegades somewhere around here, but not plain renegades.

Let me know,
