As the topic says: I've got a dedicated server on a 10mbit connection and the people that connect gets around 100 in ping when they should be around 20-30... Although this COULD be because of the hardware, a P3 @733 mhz, 256 RAM... Is this not enough? I asked around on a different forum and there was one guy who had a dedicated server on a P3 @ 700 mhz and he said it worked just fine...
Soo... If anyone could just tell me your thoughts about this it would be appreciated.

You might have a 100mbit connection, but it could be a high latency connection. Have some of your players try running a traceroute from their systems to your server's IP and see what path its taking and what the return times are.

well....
A 700 p3 and a 256 ram can be a bit to slow.

I used a xp 2500 and a 256 ram and i had some strange acting in my server.
it was not a good ram i had in it.
I thange it to a 400 ddr cl 2 ram and then my server got perfeckt.

So i might be your ram that is to slow togheter with a slow cpu.
And with a better ram or more ram it might get better.

How many people did you have on the server? Is this running from a home line? If so how many other machines do you have running internet apps?

The root of your problem appears to be the ram, a bare minimum of 512 is a safe bet for any server. Granted other games require a higher ammount of ram to be stable. Is your ram certified or is it just good old off the shelf? This does make a difference, no name ram, no matter how much you have, can cause all sorts of headaches.

And yes it also could very well be a choke point between your server and the clients. Having those with problems run a trace route to your server can answer alot of questions.

Your latency is the processor and the ram. You need a good bit of memory 1-2 gig and a decent processor (p4 2ghz or better) to run a decent server.
