Hey guys,

I have what I'm sure is a very noobie question but we all gotta ask it sometime I guess... we're renting a dedicated server but were only given one IP. We want to run 2 or maybe 3 iterations of BF2 on it, but with only one IP we're left to just using different ports for the different games. Is this OK or will it cause latency issues or anything?

I looked for some sort of general server setup guide or other posts on this but I missed it if they're here. I've run servers on dedicated boxes briefly before and understand setup and most of the network stuff, but I'm not clear on some of the settings, such as this stuff if anyone has any advice:

1. The IP question above..
2. The choke bandwidth... I assume running this full open is not really necessary or even necessarily good... should we throttle that back?
3. Are there any crucial tweaks to do with Win server 2003 that will help it run game iterations more smoothly?

I'll have more I'm sure but it would be a great start if someone could help me with this....

TIA

1: single ip is ok, just run each server on different port and make sure you make one config file for each server, and one maplist for each. And make one program dir and one startup file for each server. Using same ip and multiple ports should not cause any choke or bandwith issues.

2: BW Choke setting can normally be left without any setting. but if you want to make sure, you can measure how much BW the server uses during normal play with max players, then add 20% to the measured number and you should be good to go.

3: The twaks are many. First, stop all services that you do not need/use.
Then try to use perfmon to see what (if anything) is slowing the server down.
Make sure the server runs in high timer mode (this can be done with FPS booster or other software that sets the server in high resolution mode).
mplayer can also do this. to do it start mplayer, open a movie file, start the movie, and then press pause. this will do the same.

Good luck ;)

Yes, I think I understand about the services, and have that knocked back pretty well....

Can you tell me more about perfmon and high timer/high resolution mode? Are you saying to start media player and play a movie, pause it and leave it running? I was under the impression that vid settings on the server didn't really matter because that was more client side... maybe I'm misunderstanding. Can you clarify for me?

Mplayer will set the server in "high resolution" mode, this does not mean high graphics resolution, but rather that the os will run in a mode that is more suited for realtime applications (like video, but also game servers benefit from this)
