Ranked server can only be setup via a EA certified GSP (game server provider). You can launch a dedicated server on your home pc or your own dedicated box, by launching the bf2 server exe from your start menu, under battlefield2.
Sorry on the road via a laptop without the game installed (not that a laptop would play BF2 well).

Do i have to buy a license or something?

Right now, you have to rent a server from a GSP(game server provider) who is part of EA's trusted GPS program. These tend to be more money BTW.
I have not heard of any talk about EA letting the general public run ranked servers.

Ranked servers have to be rented from EA or one of their partners. there are 4 partners that I know of right now, and they offer more control than the EA version, using BF2CC.
We rented a ranked server to start with, but cancelled it because while it was ranked like everyone wanted, it offered very little control. They are not lockable and several key configs cannot be changed that often need to be for league play. So you can't really run a ranked server and compete on it as well.
I have noticed that several ranked servers are running locked... I don't know if these are test servers or what, but on the ingame browser it shows them both locked and ranked. I don't know how they're doing it because all 4 companies I talked to said the same thing: ranked servers cannot be locked per agreement with EA and due to hard coding in the ranked server files. I'm curious tho.

That is correct.
They do allow switching between ranked and non-ranked on the same IP so that you can lock the server down for a match (and change the config).
Hopefully i'll be offering ranked servers shortly. EA is probably swamped because they are slow to respond.

That's interesting.. I presume you would have to have the unranked server files installed as well, and the customer be able to stop the ranked server and start the unranked server, both configured for the same IP? Seems like the server files should have just been configured so that it doesn't report any results when it's locked. BF1942 had that so it can't be that hard.. Is this something the hosters offer, or will you offer it? (I'm guessing you're with a hosting company?- sry I'm new here..)

From what i've read, yes, EA will allow this. I'm pretty sketchy on the details still, i'm only in the initial contact phases with EA (thanks to Rudedog for hooking me up with EA).
As Rudedog said, yes, i run a GSP. In my "free" time, i come here and help people run their own servers. My favorite part is when i have to fix another GSPs problem, i always do it with a smile ;)

cool, good to meet you. We're renting a dedicated box right now but I got a lot of team members that are gaga over the stats. I'd like to have a ranked server going for them, but our first focus is league play so whatever server we use it HAS to be able to be locked, and renting two is out of the question money-wise (especially with the price of ranked servers, even from the partners which are far more reasonable.) Let me know more as you find out if you would. Thanks.
