You cannot set your port to : set net_ip 192.168.1.101

That doesn't work. 192.168.x.x is an unroutable ip and is used for internal networks only. So in other words the router or gateway in your house, uses a DHCP server to assign IP addresses to each computer it is connected to. These IP addresses are not real and exist only on your home network.

You're correct in saying that the 192.168.x.x IP ranges are not routable on the Internet. But he can still put his server on the Internet by configuring his router to forward port 8756 to his server. In fact, that's the only way it can be done because he can't set the IP to his router's IP.

Interesting, didn't know that. That is why I just say..... No to home hosted game servers. :)

Also on a security note you should never run anything like this as root. Given the q3 engine issues with packets larger than 1024 you open yourself up to compromise via the game. I suggest you create an account called COD or similar and only give it enough permissions to run the server and nothing else.

Also depending on your router you may need to put that box on the net using either port forwarding as was mentioned earlier or DMZ host that specific IP, though the DMZ hosting is not suggested. With some modification you can make you Linux box your game server and router with minimal configuration and have a smarter firewall and essentially a router that will set higher priority to your game packets and decrease latency in certain circumstances.
