View Full Version : Setting up a server for noobs....
This is for anyone sitting around at thier desk at work today with not much to do I have 1/2 of a T1 line at my house and I am a noob at setting up servers. Could someone take the time and post detailed instructions from start to finish to set up (I think the line could handle 20 people) a 20 person s&d server with the server watch cheat protection software. I think lots of noobs like myself would appreciate it! Please step by step. Like 1. 2.

Your in luck, I just started my guide. it's about 70% done. It's enough to get you going and get your server started.
check it out here (http://www.codadmin.com/nuke/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=950)
By trying my guide, you can give me input on how it flows for someone that is trying to setup a server for the first time.
I in turn, can guide you through it and make changes to my guide as I help you get your box up and running.
Excellent... I will try this when I get home. A few questions from a noob just reading over this.
1. If I have 768 upload I should be able to handle 16 people?
2. When you say do not save the files to your root directory are you saying to save it to like c:/call of duty server and not just c:?
3. I have another box with a monitor and call of duty is installed on that machine already. Do I still need to copy the files to a directory like you said? Each box has its own cd key.
Creating and running the proper config files is what I have a problem with the most. Last night I messed around with it and got it running and saw it on the server list. But I was not sure if the game was running like I wanted it to :(
I will E-mail you later when I get home and get started on it.

1) should be close, I forgot to mention calculating your max rate.
Check out my other site for calc. max rate HERE (http://www.mohadmin.com/nuke/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=18)
2) yes, c:\call of duty is fine beleive it or not some people install the game to c:\
3)I would copy and run the sever from it's own box with it's own directory. when you run the CoDMP.exe no CD key is required.
I assume both boxes have there own "public" IP.
There is a link to a zip file containing all the cfg files you need to get started. I sould be around WAITING FOR THE DAMN PATCH TO BE RELEASED. == sorry.
Last thing, I want a T1 in my house :x
My email is jim@landi.net I do run a challange response email program, just follow the prompt and enter the key code displayed on your screen, I will get your email after that.
Good Luck
I sent ya a E-mail RudeDog... the cd 2 has setup/data and a main folder... problem is that there is a main folder already in there from cd 1 and it asks me to overwrite it?!?!
Well I have got it up and running... Last problem is if I open my ports 28960, 20500 & 20510 for Computer B to run the server, Computer A (the gaming machine I want to connect to it with) can not refresh the in game server list??
Also I try to connect through gamespy and its not on the server list there.
I can see the game on Computer B.
Strange...

Yes, that's the problem with trying to run a server from behind a router.
Try this. only forward the two Activision ports. 20500 and 20520
don't forward port 28960, start your game server and let it load completely.
Then start your game server and see if you can refresh gamespy as well as see your computer.
This is an ongoing problem on the Linux, email list. They have not gotten it to work as of yet.

your half a t1 line... you can host depending on your max rate you set with server check this out
16 player server estimate:
Percent of a T-1 used 24.47%
Percent of a T-3 used 0.84%
Percent of a OC3 0.244%
Percent of a OC12 0.061%
Percent of a OC48 0.02%
Percent of a OC192 0.00%
18 player server estimate:
Percent of a T-1 used 27.53%
Percent of a T-3 used 0.94%
Percent of a OC3 0.274%
Percent of a OC12 0.068%
Percent of a OC48 0.02%
Percent of a OC192 0.00%
26 player server estimate:
Percent of a T-1 used 39.76%
Percent of a T-3 used 1.36%
Percent of a OC3 0.396%
Percent of a OC12 0.099%
Percent of a OC48 0.03%
Percent of a OC192 0.01%
this is all based on that you have your max rate set to 8000
16 player
Percent of a T-1 used 24.47% if you double that that %48.94
So I'd cut down to a 12 person server if I were you
Well I got it running in some sort of fashion... I really want to run it with server watch on and with TWL ladder configs running. That would be a nice set up. If anyone has any time to help me out with server watch and setting up the TWL config on teamspeak please post back so we can meet in the codadmin channel. Thanks
