As posted on my clan forums:

Well, I bought BIA yesterday and got to play it for about a couple of hours. This is only a SP review, I will follow up with a MP review once I get to it. Here are my impressions:

Graphics: Nothing ground-breaking, but still looked very good. The graphics reminded me a lot of COD. The textures were very similar and the game ran very smooth at MAX settings. I never had a single stutter or glitch. Now, mind you, my machine is high-end, so I don't know how it will run on a lower machine. I did notice a few anomalies, like bad guys clipping through objects. You could not shoot them and they couldn't shoot you, but you could still see and elbow or knee occasionally.

Sound: I was extremely impressed with the sound. This game has the best weapon sounds of any WWII shooter I've ever played! When you fire a gun with some fire power, it sounds right. I've fired most of the weapons in the game, except heavy MGs, and they all sound authentic to me. SH and COD don't even come close in the Audio department.

Gameplay: Here is where this game stands alone from the other WWII FPS's (or ANY FPS for that matter). This game FORCES you to use authentic military tactics. It is like a combination of a FPS and a RTS game. They felt perfectly blended and balanced. Switching to the battlefield view (for the life of me, I can't remember the name for it), it is amazing. You can fly around the battlefield and see things in real time. The game goes into pause while you asses the situation. Now mind you, when in battlefield view, you can only see enemies you have already spotted. So you cannot "cheat" to find hidden enemies. You also have squad command that you are to use to control your squad mates. They are divided into rifle teams and assault teams. The rifle teams are used to lay down covering fire to suppress the enemy, while you and your assault team flank and kill the enemy. If you successfully use your suppressing fire, you can easily move about the battlefield using cover to flank the enemy. There are easy to use, on-screen indicators that tell you how effective your suppressing fire is. If it is not working properly, the enemy will flank you easily for the kill. You must move your squadmates into propper positions to cover you, and you have to use suppressing fire yourself to allow them to get into position. It sounds complicated, but the interface is VERY EASY to use. You can pick it up in about 30 minutes. It feels flawless and comfortable. I repeatedly found myself say "how cool is that?" or "Dang, that's a nice touch" about the FPS/RTS blend in this game. The one word that sums up the gameplay is "Refreshing" (or fun).

A.I.: All of you "run-and-gunners" out there (myself included) can throw all your old tactics out the window. You will die quickly if you think you can "Rambo" your way through. I could "Rambo" any game before this (including all the MOH series, COD series, and even the Rainbow series) but you will NOT do it in this game. You can only take a few rounds before you die and the enemy is too smart to be bum-rushed. Even in flanking maneuvers, they can catch you slipping. Several times, I had my squad laying down suppressing fire to keep the enemies heads down while I flanked with another guy, only to bump into a German trying to do that very thing to me. The A.I. use cover and concealment very well. The aiming system is strange, don't even bother with the crosshairs (which are off by default), the "Down the sights" view is the only way to get a kill. Even then, you shots miss often even when you swear that you had the baddie dead. It seems that it is trying to keep you from "rambo-ing it", so it forces you to have your squadmates do much of the work. Trust me, your squadmates do very well. They will tell you when an order you gave doesn't put them into postition to lay down fire. They will also yell at your dumb-behind for standing in the line of fire(I got that a lot).

Misc: You don't take a lot of damage before you die, and there are no medi-packs (at least that I've found so far). You are forced to use cover and concealment, or die easily. You have to take your time and play smart or you will be frustrated easily. The language is salty, but seemed about right for military men in the time of war. Just remember what the M rating was for.

Bottom line: This game was a total blast to me. It takes some of the best from WWII shooters and WWII RTS's, and creates a whole new expeience. Many of you run-n-gunners, may not like it, but any of you who value realism will LOVE the strategy/tactics element. I think this game is a giant step in the the genre and could possibly change the FPS for the better. The bar has been set for the AUTHENTIC WWII shooter, who wants some?

I recommend this game fully, it is more than worth the money for the SP alone. I will add my MP thoughts later.

Thanks for the review. Looking forward to trying it myself,

How do your other clan members feel? From other forums, reviews seem to be all over the place.

So far I'm the only one who has it in |Ci|, but I know of two of the M15F1Ts that have it, both love it. One did complain about the language, but I feel the M rating says it all. NTM, in war, soldiers and sailors drop a few F-bombs........

Got my copy last night and loaded it.

First impressions, single player:

I love the game!
At first it was quite disconcerting. It starts similarly to Pacific Assault, where you're thrown into a battle not knowing ANYTHING. I got everyone killed, seemingly.
You're then switched to an aircraft and are about to jump into Normandy. The jump proceeds, but you're without any weapons. A sergeant hands you a 1911, and you follow him around for quite awhile.
The game guides you through learning the tactics of supressive fire and maneuver. For those of you who saw Band of Brothers, its virtually all about what Dick Winters did at Brecourt Manor. You set up a fire base with one set of folks, and maneuver with the other.
You proceed with the sergeant until others find you after the drop. He then gives YOU one guy to lead, and a task to perform.
After you're given the guy, the game guides you through how to command him to suppress, assault, and rally back to you by using a scarecrow with a German uniform on it. Quite clever, actually, although I left the guy firing all of his ammo at the scarecrow while I figured out the keys...:o
As east2surf said, it took me about 30 minutes to figure everything out, and I was 'somewhat' competent.
Key bindings are something of an issue (for me, anyway). A lot of the bindings are not like other FPS's, and it took me awhile to get them to where I was comfortable...still not there, completely. Those of you using Nostromos will probably have an easier time. For example, if you don;t have a 3-button mouse (I don't), there could be some problems. The right mouse button is used for commands to your supression and assault teams, and, if you're going to hit ANYTHING, you must use the "over-the-sight" mode with your weapon. By default, without a 3-button, this is the "E" key. (you can imagine my fumbling with that one)
Movement keys are pretty much the same, depending on the mode you're in. The "V" key is the battlefield view east2surf mentioned, and you use the movement keys to look around while in that mode as well, but you don't GO anywhere, just look, from waaaay above. Kinda slick.
The indicators in the game are quite clear...when the enemy is NOT suppressed (therefore dangerous), there's a red dot over them. When the are suppressed, it turns grey. You HAVE to watch where everyone is, though, using the compass. I had the sergeant right next to me when I was firing, and although it looked like I had a clear shot, the game said he was in the way and wouldn't let me fire.
You must keep down, or keep moving...damage is severe, and like, east2surf, I found no health packs. Of course, I'm not far into the game yet, and I assume that a medic will show up sooner or later.
First impressions, multi-player:

Well, for one thing, someone already had my normal screen name...<sigh>
You have a choice of UBI.COM or LAN
Once logged on to UBI, you can create a listening instance of a game, with 2 or 4 players, choice of maps (or, rather, scenarios), and wait (I guess).
Initially, last night, I couldn't connect in. The connection asks for your CD key (or, Online Key Code) and every time I used mine, it kept telling me that it was already in use. I downloaded, and appied, the 1.02 patch, this morning, and was able to connect with my key. Don't know if that was the cause, but the (very brief) patch description says:
Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30
Patch v1.02

Version 1.02 of Brothers in Arms is a release-day update to enhance various aspects of Ubi.com online matchmaking support and LAN multiplayer features
If you create your own game instance, you must wait until someone else joins...it won't let you go any farther. Or, I didn't know how to make it go any farther...
I also tried joining a couple of existing games (some were password locked) without success...they were full apparently. The game display was not very informative
I'll keep trying, though (alternating with single player...I need the practice), even though I'm likely to embarrass myself.
I'll update this when I have more information, but, overall, I'm with east2surf. Great game, VERY different...a run-and-gun player has some major adjustments to overcome. One more thing, lots of wavering with the weapons (as in a REAL weapon), so steadying up on a target is an excercise in mouse work. You get a KAR98 early on (remember, you lost your weapons in the jump), and the bolt-action is not as fast as CoD or MOH, as well as the sight wavering.

Olddog, the CD Key issue is a problem with UbiSoft. They say it will be fixed by Monday, si it should be ironed out. I haven't tried MP yet, so I'll withold judgement. If you're itching to try it this evening, my MSN is east2surf@cox.net , so give me a shout and we'll link up.

I think the SP is amazing, but the MP version is pants to be honest.

Cant have fun like in cod or MoH, as only 4 members can play at anyone time, cant see much reason for clans setting up servers or anything.

I can't get into any of the server instances...I get "Not enough player slots..." or something like that. My key did work, though, finally. There's a notice when you connect to the UBI MP server that says you need to download the 1.02 patch.

east2surf, not sure about this evening, but, if I'm around I'll definitely holler...

I did, however, manage to get my corporal killed while trying to flank the MG behind the sandbags in the farmhouse area...:(. So, I'm all alone now (and currently dead) until I can find some more cannon fodder that will actually follow my dubious leadership. In my own defence, I pressed the wrong key, and told him to charge the damned MG.
