Hey all, you may have witnessed this already, but I feel as many admins as possible should know about this.

This doesn't have anything to do with configs.
This doesn't have anything to do with dedicated Linux boxes.
This doesn't have anything to do with sv_pure and it's total and complete uselessness (IMO lol).

This has to do with hackers (the b()()ns ingame...not security hackers) and good samaritans.

Let me explain. Hacker reads latest news on CoD. Reads that there a new patch coming out this week. Reads that said patch will allow admins to ban specific, unique player IDs which are based on the individual CD Keys that come with the game. Hacker says to self "I don't wanna be banned fro mall the servers I go to!" And so hacker realises he needs OTHER keys.

Hacker goes into small server with 2 or three ppl in it. Acts the poor innocent white lamb whose CoD files have been horribly horribly mangled by a virus or rabid Recycle Bin. Hacker asks for some files to patch up their files w/o having to reinstall game. Good samaritan says "OK, see u on MSN in 5 mins"

Among the files the hacker will ask for are:
1) hunkusage.dat (file contains LOTS of goodies about your comp. A definite do-not-distribute file)

2) CODKEY (this file is nothing more than a text file with the extension removed. It contains a short note from Activision telling you not to modify the file....AND YOUR UNENCRYPTED CD KEY)

3) Random other .dll or .cfg files to cover their tracks.

If the hacker gets CODKEY...you're toast. You'll be banned from so many servers so fast, you won't believe it.

Please, PLEASE I ask you, keep and eye out for people asking for other people to send them CoD files to repair their copy or some other poppycock. Just tell the guy to shove off. Kick him, ban him, do whatever. This will spread, I garauntee it. I have already had 4 people ask me for CoD files in public servers.

Just keep an eye out for your players. Thx.

Thanks for the heads up. I can only echo your concerns, do not give out any of the Cod files you have off your computer.
