'lo all. On a request by the author of the post I am about to quote (from IWN.com's Forum) I have decided to post his original post from there. If it would not be asking too much, I (and the author) would enjoy if the interested read it and contribute with their opinion on the post's idea (since this is a more suitable Forum for admins...).

Hello all,

First of all I would like to introduce myself at this Forum. I am just another gamer that simply fell in love with our beloved Call of Duty, and am an ex-MoH:AA / RtCW / RtCW:ET / CS player. Secondly, I hereby apologize if this has been brought up / spoken before. As you rapidly noticed, I am new to this forum (in what means to "posting" ... I had been sort of accompanying what has been said here in a moderate or not so active way, when I wasn't registered yet), so the mistake of this have beeing posted / discussed before may easily happen to me.

Now, returning to topic, anyone who has played RtCW, and its stand-alone "expansion" (Hope I am not making a mistake by calling it that), ET, probably knows from start the meaning of Referee Passwords. The Referee Passwords are basically an easy and functional admin tool. It is pretty much simple a quick tool that has the ability / objective to Administrate the basic settings of a server (not the base settings, or the ones that are used to "build" up the server ... just the most simple and basic ones). It can kick / ban / mute - Unmute players ; Pause the match ; Restart the map ; Call a vote ; Change gametype(s) / Mod's of the server (Eg.: Change from various competition modes) / Map and Map Rotation (If I am not mistaken) ; Balance the teams ; Swap the teams ; Etc, etc, etc. ...

It brings the advantage to the Head-Administrator of the server (normally the ones responsible for the server ... or the ones that have physical access to the servers) or the person with the Remote Console access (Rcon) of giving LIMITED access to administrate / moderate the server when the Admin himself cannot do that, or simply chooses so. Example: the case of when you lend your server to anyone foreign to your clan / association and you can not be present in the server to administrate it for yourself (With Rcon or Ref. Pass), for several reasons (Eg.: You are not allowed to be present at the match - for obvious reasons - or even you have no way to be present at the match, etc.). You, then, will not give out something as important to your server as the Rcon (for obvious reasons) to someone you barely know. This is the PRIVATE server example ... another example may be the PUBLIC server one, where the Admin cannot be always present and then is forced to give away the Referee Passwords to trustworthy and active people in the game, so the daily administration of the server in question is not sort of "abandoned" or poorly moderated. And there is the example, obviously, where the word Referee is strong: Leagues, and most leagues have referees observing the games and controlling the server, so they will need a quick server access tool other than the rcon (that maybe it is not so functional as people think ... to Clanwars for example, where the functionality of the Ref. Pass is the name of the game).

Note: I am NOT a Call of Duty / RtCW:ET server administrator, nor were. I am not totally familiar with the Referee Password and am still adapting to COD's Rcon commands. On the other had I was a MoH:AA private server admin, so I am a bit adapted to MoH's Rcon. But that is not what is on point, the point is that although I am not fully (or 100%) aware of the advantages of the Referee Pass, from what I have seen / heard, it brings up HUGE advantages to server administrators.

Note #2: I did NOT Post this in the "IWN Server Depot" section of the forum on purpose, as I had got the idea of getting the most opinions (even if they do not come from Admins, for Eg.) as possible. If a moderator chooses to moving this topic for not belonging to it's proper location, so be it.

Note #3: I would specially enjoy to hear Infinity Ward's Employees opinion on this one, if possible. Thanks in advance.

IMO, I can only see advantages into adding this to our beloved game, so think a bit about it for yourself, vote and express your opinion!

Best regards,
Tyler

From Tyler and myself,
Best Regards to CODAdmin.com

P.S.: Together with the original post I have also included a Poll. Once again we would appreciate if together with an opinion from fellow admins a vote could come too. :P
