View Full Version : Insight needed on best settings for max FPS
Does anyone have any advice on how to set up the video options to optimize the FPS in Breakthrough? I am haveing REAL issues where my FPS wil drop in the red and at times is unplayable for a few seconds. I have been running this game from the original and although I experienced some FPS drop with Spearheads maps it is nothing like the stock BT maps for FPS drop. I run the server and I am not talking about lag, my ping is sub 30 and the netwrok part is smooth, but you can see the FPS drop to 10 and that is unplayable.
I have 2 different computers and have tried it on both with no luck. I have a P4 2 gig with a gig of RAM and a new ATI RAdeon 9800 pro I just bought to replace my Gforce 4600 in an attempt to get better FPS. The wierd thing is there is NO difference between these 2 cards and nothin g I seem to set makes any difference at all.
Last night I set the card to Antiailasing off, Antriscopic filtering off, vsync off, and all texture settings to the lowest possible. Then I went in game and set it to 640x480 with 16 bit textures and EVERY setting on both menus to the lowest possible setting. I STILL was getting from 90 to 10 FPS on most all maps. The wierd thing I can turn around and set everything to high, 1280x1024, and 32 bit color and I get the SAME FPS readings.
I am at my wits end and am wondering if I am doing something wrong or is it just the maps?????

Hey there,
This probably won't work, but you mentioned you turned off various option on your CARD. Can you just enable the card to let the game control those features (antilaising, filters, ect..)? Just a thought.
I just got an AMD 2400 and a new FX5200 card and my fps top around 90! Much better than my p3 933 & gforce mx64 which gave me between 15 -25 fps. I believe ithe card lets the game override some of the the features you mention.
Good luck,

Look in the MOHAA folder for configure_breakthrough.exe and use it. It will call your card a 64 meg, but it improved my frames. I average 90 to 100 FPS with lows at 55 and highs at 225. I have a 9500 Pro card.

what mothor boards are you using? there have been bios releases that have fixed compatiblility issues with new cards..both ati and the nvidia ones. dunno if your mobo is oneof these or if its something else.
I have a amd2700, 5900 ultra and play no problem 60+fps allt he time with game settings maxed out and 8x anisotropic filtering

F_K- I was having a problem with BT where my FPS had dropped into the single digits in most places of the maps. I went to www.FutureMark.com and downloaded their most recent 3DMark benchmarking tool and used it to test my system and compare online against other systems to discover my problem. Turned out I had a corrupted AGP driver on the mboard so the mboard was defaulting to PCI. No way I would have found it without that test. My 64mb GeForce3 Ti200 now cranks out decent FPS and runs pretty well although, not nearly as smooth as SH does with the same rig.
I highly recommend this test to anyone having problems with their rig. Theres no other way to really find a problem thats not obvious without using a benchmark program to stress the system and record the data.
I still have occasional major FPS drops in SP mode, seem to be related to Triggers.
Also there is a great article at Sharkeys.com on vid card tweaking:

for asus drivers go to www.asus.com and search for bios updates(risky, I wouldnt do this unless you know what your doing cuz you can turn your mobo into a giant paper weight).. look for new mobo/chipset drivers for your motherboard first.. if those dont help then try a bios update.

I had a serious issue with fps and getting kicked from BT servers after 5 min of play. First, I nixed my AC97 onboard sound and installed a SB Live card. Fps prob fixed. B1942 had a similar issue with fps and certain sound cards. Second, there is a fix from microsoft to help with booting issues. It is for AMD processors. Add this line to your reg. Hkey Local machine-system-current control set-control-session manager-memory managment. Then add this line " LargePageMinimum" its a reg_dword and this goes in value "ffffffff" Hope this helps someone. It fixed my prob. BTW Im running a Ti4600 card and a AMD 2200XP processor.

Here you go. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;270715
Thx guys for the help... I have a Compaq Evo (not the cheap consumer model) and there appear to be no bios fixes, but I am using the onboard sound so I'll try an add in card. I also have a clone I built with a ASUS mobo and I have not updated the bios lately so I'll try that as well.
Thanx for the info Snype... big help.

do you have a patch to XP. also when i set my texutre quality to lowest settings it plays fine but as soon a s out it back it lags agin so i know texure is playing a big part in the screw ups.
I low level formatted my machine and started over... XP pro, all the patches, and updates, all BIOS patches, ATI drivers tweaked as much as possible. I picked up a few frames doing this but some maps are still kicking 10 FPS in places rendering them unplayable. In addition, I have TONS of people on the server every day tell me they are getting the same thing.
I am not stupid enough to think that I will affect this company in any way but this is the end of the line for FK and my server. This week I have the 5th most popular server according to the serverspy stats but I will be taking it down and convertng to COD the first day it comes out. I know Tritech and others don't want to hear negative posts but you people have no idea how frustrating you make this game for the average person, and no idea what the lack of support for the admin community does to us. We have no place to lash out but here and with our wallets. Great pictures of the new MOHAA, but I for one will completely ignore it. EA, you have taken my last dollar..... nuff said.

i agree with F_K im very disapointed in EA for even releasing this game with all the bugs behind it, i mean it looks nice and is fun but not playable which kills both of those and just makes it into a crappy extension. ill probaly be hesitant to buy pacific assualt but i still want it i know ill just wait and see what everybody says about the game play before spending any money on it.
