OK I am the first to admit that I'm Mr. Server Admin newbie.
Anyway, I'm building a new box and CoD will currently be one of the primary games run. Is there any information available as to how much bandwidth up/down is recommended per client?
This box will run on it's own dedicated line but I have to pay (go figure) based on how fat I want the pipe. Looking for any input.
Great site btw, came here with one question and have completely smashed 5 cfg's toying with other things I read here lol.

I would recomend keeping the pipe uncapped - try an keep your server full all month and see what it uses.
It will depend on how many clients you have X maxrate.
You could possibly estimate what you will need but it all depends on how much the server is played in by how many people.

Tighten is correct. Multiply your sv_maxrate (the rate in Kilobytes/sec) you want to send each client. I find sv_maxrate 8000 to be good for RTCW (Same engine as CoD), so your mileage may vary.
do the following calculation:
(sv_maxrate) x (# of slots you want, sv_maxclients) x (8) = bits/sec.
I ran a 34 player RTCW server, sv_maxrate of 8000; which yields:
8000 x 34 x 8 = 2176000 (or just under 2.2 Megabits/sec). I verified this using MRTG on our router & switch ports.
If you only have a DS1 of bandwidth (1.5 Mbits or so), you can only support 24 players at one time; or else you'll hit the upper limit of your pipe.

You may want to set the rate as well as cap until you get an idea so you don't get hit with a big bill. I'm not capping the bandwidth or rate on mine and with 40 people it peaked at 4.22 meg. The average is about 2.8 meg. I'm using cricket ( very similar to MRTG ) and it polls every 5 minutes. Resolution, you may want to check out cricket. Same thing as MRTG only better ;). It also does SNMP and you can see your processor usage, paging etc. It's pretty nice.

So if I follow this formula I am looking at roughly 4000GB/month trafic for a 20 player server? If not. What would I be looking at in monthly usage for a 20 player server?

If you are paying per-gig then I guess so? I am not sure if the formula is completely accurate though.
Also mrtg you get charged the average - not usage.
