here is what I think about compiling maps, someone please correct me if I am wrong or if there is a better way
Once you have made a map it gets place into your COD/Main/Maps folder. If it is not in there then you need to put it in there to perform the vital step of testing your map. Once it is in your COD/Main/Maps folder press right click and choose open with. Then open it with Q3MAP. This came with the COD map editor. This creates the .bsp which is what you load to play your map. Once you have your .map and .bsp, create a folder somewhere called "maps" and in there make a folder called "mp" and in there place your two files. Then go to where your maps folder that you just created is, and right click it and click on WinZip and then add to zip file. Then it will ask you where you want it and what you want it called. I would put it on my desktop and call it something like. "map.pk3" erasing the zip extension and replacing it with a pk3 extension. Now just drag your map.pk3 file and place it into your COD/Main folder. Now to test it you can either upload to your dedicated server or create a new server. One thing you need to pay attention to is what gametype your on. If you made no tdm spawns then you do not want the gametype to be tdm. Once you have started your server on one of the maps, hit your console button and type, if its a server that is running of your comp, "/map mapname" where mapname is the name of your map. If you are running it on a dedicated server then you need to load it using rcon, type this “/rcon map mapname” where mapname is the name of your map. If it said cannot find mapname.bsp, make sure you typed the mapname right, and make sure you put it in your COD/main folder. Once loaded successfully you will then see all the things you messed up on your map, and can now start having fun fixing it and seeing how everything works. For every time you want to test your saved map you will need to run the map through the Q3MAP program and then put the files into your maps/mp folder and then create the pk3 and place that in your COD/Main folder.
Edit, I think once you have your personal server set up you can just open cod and type /map mapname in console and it will automatically start up your listenserver with that map, it was working for me
