I have not really tried that in a long time.
You can try this -seeing how you will be at the desktop anyway.
Assuming you have enough resources -
Copy the COD folder from the installation directory and put it on your desktop.
Rename it CODDS.
Place it back in the directory or leave it on your desktop - doesn't matter.
Make a shortcut from the CoDMP.exe and keep it in the same folder (CODDS)
Put a cfg.file in the main folder of the CODDS, configure it properly (there are many example .cfg's in these forums.)
Then, right click on the shortcut and add the following to the end of the target line,
+set dedicated 2 +set net_ip "yourip" +set net_port "28990" (dont use default) +exec codserver.cfg (assuming you name the config file that) +exec maps.cfg (or +map_rotate if no maps.cfg) +set sv_gamespy 1.
Now if you are using a router, switch or some other type of NAT device you need to configure that/those as well.
I think this should work - for LAN it would be +set dedicated 1
If you run into problems you should be able to view the console and get a rough idea of what errors are stopping you from runing the game - i.e. couldn't exec codserver.cfg, not resolving to master servers, couldn't exec blah blah blah.

thanks for the reply...i was just foolin around with the game. i started a server. i got the log screen but nothing else. so i started the game again...leaving the log screen in the tool bar. the server was listed now....so i joined my own server..lmao. it worked. how strange is that. i didnt have to add anythnig at all to anything to get it to work. that may not be the perscribed way to do it...but it did work. the server is running now while im here. and its not dedicated. go figure.

The server will run with no "server.cfg" it will default to cod_mp.cfg.
You should use a cfg and put in the parameters so you can have full use / control over it.
In any event if your happy - great!

ok...here another question...is it possible to just add something to the existing config file and have it work?

Yes if you copy the [] charector so a command like this
[]seta sv_maxclients 28
But it is so easy just to add a cfg. and exec it from the target line?
