View Full Version : Max Rate Connecting to Dedicated Server LAN SIDE
This may be a stupid question, but I am curious.....
Even though I have the my dedicated server set as follows for max rate
set sv_maxrate 8000
:?: what effect on my bandwidth does my connecting LAN SIDE on my dedicated server if my client max rate is set to 20000 :?:
haven't really seen anyone ask and wondered if connecting lan side if I was hogging some of my own bandwidth for the server by having my client set that high :?
Thanks In Advance,

As far as I know, the server setting for the client rate trumps any client values that are higher and leaves rates lower than it alone. For example:
Server Max Rate = 9000
=======================
Client1 Rate = 20000, server adjusts rate to 9000
Client2 Rate = 5000, server leaves rate at 5000

Yes, thats exactly how it works Shockwave.
The server sets the setting, the client rate cant get grab more than the server gives it. If you watch the stats in Autokick you see a lot of clients that dont have their client rate set properly either. If set too low the client will limit the amount it asks for even tho it may be on a broadband connection (like in your Client 2 example). If the client is on ISDN or less thats ok but if its on cable/dsl, then hes shorting himself.
Thanks for the quick response guys...=)..Now I know when my server starts to lag that it is not me...lol

Snype - you mention that rate can be set client side...
I am on 128k ADSL, and rate is always 5000 - is there a way to increase this client side (Given that 9000 is default)?

The client side setting is set in the game under Multiplayer Options. At the bottom of the dialog box there is a button that says Net Connection, press the arrow to the right and make your selection. You can set it to the highest setting (lan), but you will only receive as much as the maxrate is set at the server. From what you are saying it sounds like yours is not set properly.
