View Full Version : localization.txt custom mess. instead of "press fire to
Will it work / anyone that have got it work with some custom
welcome message on a server in spearhead ?
And will it work when pure 1 works (hope in the first patch)
whould be nice to have this working if you running a server that is modified so everyone can see what is done when joining the server
if not will there be another "message of the day" system working
for servers?

I have tried modding the loc file with no luck yet.
MOTD works best just useing Autokick.

First thing I thought to do was to try the old MOTD download from here and it didn't work. Then I opened the SpearHead pk file found the new localization text, coped it, modified it, created a global folder to put it in, and placed the global folder in the mainta folder -- thought it would work but didn't.
Probably something simple, but like anything else it's a mystery until you learn. Back to the drawing board.

p.s. yes, autokick is great for MOTD, but you can't always have it running.

I couldn't got MOTD to work but I was able to change the join messages and death messages by extracting the new localization file making the changes and then putting the new localization file into a .pk3 in the mainta directory. It is of note however that I couldn't paste the swear filter into the localization file and get it to work. I noticed that there is a version # on the script but am not sure how to change it.

So we cant run this outside of the .pk3 like we could in mohaa?

I haven't been able to create success by using the global folder like we used to.

still wonder what will happen if you extract the file and change in it and then put it back in the pk3 file, when the pure 1 will work on the server
in a coming patch then the server pk3 files will not be the same as the players.
will that work or will pure 1 kick players from the server??

Has anyone tried just making a new pk3 file just for the loc file? That is, copy the loc file out, then edit it, then put it into another pk3 file using the same directory structure as the original pak file and name that file using a name that follows the original in the alphabet (pak1.pk3 -> z_loc_mod.pk3).
I'll go try that now...

NEIN!!! :evil:
Well I got it to work!!
You need to replace the 6th instance of "press fire" The one with the &&&
AND SET sv_pure to 0
So if we want to insure our clients don't use custom pk3 files we can't have a custom MOTD??????????????
I wonder if this effects other mods running on our servers.
I did not check the chat filter with sv_pure set to 0.
Need to watch the NE Patriots play :) If someone does please post your findings.

I still wonder why now we have to put it back in the pk3 file....if we didnt have to this would rid us of the pure probs...
You do not have to place it back in the pk3 file. I was just stating that if we wanted to setup our servers so our clients could not use custom pk3 files, then we can not have a custom MOTD.
I verified this with a standard global dir, placed in the mainta folder

The same could be said about the callvote.cfg or any other custom file from the stock pak files, no? That is, if we customize something from those pak files on the server, regardless of making new pak files or just replacing the stock ones, then we'd have to keep sv_pure off. But, not to be rude, aren't we getting a little ahead of ourselves with sv_pure? As far as I knew, it doesn't work on any server as of yet and we don't know if the patch will have it yet either, right?

hey, what if u used winzip? just look at file, edit it, and then save and close it, it should ask to put that file back in the pk3 file, and as long as u don't make file any bigger or smaller, it should work???? maybe del a line or two that u don't want.....

Whats wrong with autokick MOTD until the game is at least patched? Im thinking some of us are getting ahead of ourselves...

True, but some of us aren't getting our hopes up, either. The patch will most likely address many issues, but as we've all seen to date we don't always get the things we want fixed with their "patches."

RD,
Below is a cut and paste of the text from my SH localization file showing where I've placed MY MOTD in the 6th instance. I have sv_pure 0 set, and the file is placed in mainta/global on the server, but I still don't get the MOTD.
Is this what worked for you, iIf not could you please correct the text or file path here for me?
Thanx

{ "Press 'Fire' to Continue" "Press 'Fire' to Continue" }
{ "Press ( &&& ) to see your objectives." "Press ( &&& ) to see your objectives." }
{ "Press ( &&& ) to walk. Walk when you want to sneak up on enemies." "Press ( &&& ) to walk. Walk when you want to sneak up on enemies." }
{ "Press fire to join the battle!" "Press fire to join the battle!" }
{ "Press FIRE to skip the credits" "MY MOTD" }
I'm currently in Florida on business, yes business.
You should be looking of the 6th instance of "press fire" the one that looks like
"press fire &&& to join the game" "press fire &&& to join the game"
The red one is the one you want to change. if you check out the aa.com SH server you should see my very quick edit of the loc. file.
I did this at 4am this morning b4 getting on a plane and I did not reset the server like we had to in MOH:AA. So I don't know if I was tired or this is something new to SH. I will be back home Friday afternoon and will post the loc. file I used,
You are more then welcome to send me the loc.file and what you wish to say. I can make the changes and you can see where they are within the file.
If you wish me to do this, send it to my work email at jlandi@apcc.com. This is the only e-mail I can check while on the road.

Scafe6e---You have it in the wrong place it goes in the first line in your example--
{ "Press 'Fire' to Continue" "Press 'Fire' to Continue" } just delete the text in the second set of quotes and put yours in.
{ "Press 'Fire' to Continue" "This is MY MOTD!" }.

This is still not working for us.. But things aren't adding up.. For one you guys say the "6th instance of Press Fire" If I do a search for press fire in the localization.txt file.. I get three lines..
{ "Press fire to join the battle!" "Press fire to join the battle!" }
{ "Press FIRE to skip the credits" "Press FIRE to skip the credits" }
{ "Press Fire(&&&) to join the battle!" "Press Fire(&&&) to join the battle!" }
So I changed the last one to..
{ "Press Fire(&&&) to join the battle!" "Team Intelligent Hoodlums {IH} \r Server IP: 63.99.213.224:12203 \r Web: www.teamih.net \r Press Fire(&&&) to join the battle!" }
That's one long line... Notice the \r thingies in there.. Maybe that's what's causing the problems? Because mine still just looks like this:
http://www.teamih.net/images/this2.jpg
Any idea?
The \r will give you a line break
[code:1]this is a test\r a test to show you [/code:1]
would look like
this is a test
a test to show you
make sure sv_pure is set to 0
you also have to create a global dir in your mainta dir. place your edited loc.txt file there.
good luck and let us know if you get it to work

You don't need to put the file back in the pk3 file, just put it under the ...\mainta\global folder. It also doesn't use the classic MOHAA string in the center of the screen (Press fire to join the battle!), so the only place that can be changed is as explained above by rudedog.
Oh, and forget about localizing chat strings ... that also isn't working! :evil: :evil: :( :( :x

Yeah, it looks like we're going to have to be "admin-nazis" because idiots around the world can't watch their language... amazing it's such a hard concept when all they have to do is not TYPE it, which is much easier to be aware of then talking...

Yeah... I'm actually very savvy to this sort of stuff.. But my MOTD is still not working..
Here's mine in the global/localization.txt file.. Notice I left the line above and below the line I modified.. I did this so you all can clearly see which line in the file I am working with.
{ "Press Jump(&&&) or Duck(&&&) to follow a different player." "Press Jump(&&&) or Duck(&&&) to follow a different player." }
{ "Press Fire(&&&) to join the battle!" "Team Intelligent Hoodlums {IH}\r Server IP: 66.150.209.111:12203\r Web: www.teamih.net\r Press Fire(&&&) to join the battle!" }
{ "Flak 88 cannons" "Flak 88 cannons" }
Anyways.. Still not working.. Very annoying. But then again alot of stuff seems not to work right in Spearhead servers. Some servers are able to do things others can not.. But mine just says "Press Fire(Mouse2) to join the battle!" in the game still..
[code:1]{ "Press Fire(&&&) to join the battle!" "Team Intelligent Hoodlums {IH}\r Server IP: 66.150.209.111:12203\r Web: www.teamih.net\r Press Fire(&&&) to join the battle!" } [/code:1]
Just for shits and giggles ( north east turn :) ) Try adding your MOTD after the &&& instead of b4
[code:1]{ "Press Fire(&&&) to join the battle!" "Press Fire(&&&) to join the battle!\rTeam Intelligent Hoodlums {IH}\r Server IP: 66.150.209.111:12203\r Web: www.teamih.net " } [/code:1]
Don't think the first \r will work, I tried that but I could only get it to show on the same line.
Let us know

This is what I did for our server, which works fine (for reference, I've included the line before and original line left AFTER the modded entry):
[code:1]{ "Press Jump(&&&) or Duck(&&&) to follow a different player." "Press Jump(&&&) or Duck(&&&) to follow a different player." }
{ "Press Fire(&&&) to join the battle!" "Welcome to a Mohaa Crew Clan Server. Please, no cheating, TK'ing, or foul language.\nRespect others and have loads of fun. Come visit our website at www.mohaacrew.com\nDon't make The Crew come after you! [ Press Fire(&&&) to join the battle! ]" }
{ "Press Fire(&&&) to join the battle!" "Press Fire(&&&) to join the battle!" }[/code:1]
Check it out at: 66.151.132.198:12203
Make sure the file is located in the mainta\global folder and NOT main\global

So you used \n for line breaks?
And you added a completely new line above the line most people are trying to modify?

Nope.. Still didn't work..
Now I will try to remove the extra line below my line.. And keep the \n instead of \r

Sorry guys, my bad, I was looking at my Allied Assault loc.cfg.
Rude and Hammer---you bothsay you got it to work but I went to both of your servers and I dont see it!?!?
I have tried it inside the pk3, outside the pk3, sv_pure is off and I cant get it to show up. Whats going on here???????
Who has it working, I want to see it on your server, give us an IP.
Just checked mine and it's working.

Remember that the new MOTD does not show up in the middle of the screen but at the bottom now.

Well I figured it out..
I guess in spearhead it always defaults to the local harddrive for the localization.txt... Not only that.. It doesn't line break correctly.. So if you want it to read right you need to put it all on one line.. But that is a waist of time because the localization.txt that you upload to your server. Doesn't show on anyone elses computer due to the fact it defaults to the client side localization.txt.
To the people that think you have it working.. You don't.. the reason you are seeing it in the game is because you have the localization.txt in the mainta/global folder on your own harddrive...
Bummer.

THIS IS NOT FUNNY!!! :evil: :evil: First off, Mr_nStuff is right :oops:, it is looking at a local file. I always test things first locally before putting anything on the servers, and I did rename the localization.txt file in my global folder when I got the server working and posted my findings. Here's the not funny part, I renamed the file localization_.txt, as I had done in classic MOHAA before, not a care in the world. After seeing the above posts, I got home and checked things out. Yep, the file was there renamed as I had left it, went into my server and yes the message was showing up correctly. I was about to post a reply when I decided to testing on another, non-MC, public server. I was shocked to see the Mohaa Crew motd on that one as well. :rolleyes: :x :twisted:
So I renamed the file again, this time put an uderscore in front of it ... and tried the above tests again. Both failed, showing the default localizations. :evil: :evil: :x :x :x I guess EA in their infinite wisdom saw to correcting a deficiency in the localization process by preventing the server from localizing strings and accepting any file that begins with the word localization as the file for its input. Nice feature EA! ;)
--[MC] Hammer
Same here guys. Had a local version of the file for testing. Was wondering why my carriage returns where not working. :evil: :evil:
One more thing to piss me off. SH is going down faster then BF1942 I hope EA does something and fast. Getting very frustrating with all this BS.

I agree Rude!!! Me and my clan had agreed that we would probably move over to SH as far as competition goes but the way it is starting to look is that we will be staying with AA and if that is the case I dont know how much longer we will stay with MOH period.

Well I'm really upset now.. That mixed map rotation method kept crashing our server at random times during TOW maps. So now we are stuck with a map rotation using only the four TOW maps. Because you can not have TOW and other gametype maps in the same rotation. It's just not 100% bug free... It's very sad.. I really doubt they will ever get the VSTR working properly with NEXTMAP either.
I'm beginning to think someone has purposely ruined MOH.
