Hi,

i have been reading some posts here and the more i read, the more i get confused.

Can anybody tell me how much clients can connect to a server with

6.6 Mb d/l and 512 kbps u/l. average u/l = 420 kbps
os : xp
isp : telenet belgium

My problem is that i get lag around 6 clients, sometimes even with 3 (exceptional).

max rate = 25000

Is the problem my max rate, my cable connection or something else ...

Anyone who can give a reasonable explanation why i am encountering this f****ng lag problem, i am very greatful.

Is this a dedicated server or are yo playing on this also? What are the specs of the server?

Try lowering your maxrate......your upload speed is your bottleneck. My servers with 36-40 players are each spiking regularly to 4 Mbits/s

UO is a cpu hog, especially when you're playing o the same machine. Think about getting a dedicated server. As to maxrate, see the excerpt below:

sv_maxRATE determines the amount of bandwidth your server uses for each client. It is a calculation based upon your bandwidth (size of your UPLOAD pipe, not DOWNLOAD) and the numbers of players you plan on hosting. Here is the calculation:

# of clients * sv_maxrate * 8(for 8bits) = upload speed
or
Upload speed / ( # of clients * 8 ) = sv_maxrate

To determine your DOWNLOAD and UPLOAD speeds, use http://www.dslreports.com. You can do 4 free tests in a day, and I advise testing over several days, especially if you’re a cable subscriber. For example, my DOWNLOAD speed (on a cable modem) averages around 2200KBps to 2900KBps (that’s 2.2MBps to 2.9MBps), but my UPLOAD speed averages between 242KBps and 253KBps. Quite a difference. Therefore, the calculation I used is:

243000 / (13 * 8) = 2336

My total number of players is 13 (10 with 3 private slots), my UPLOAD speed is 243000Bps (243KBps), and I rounded 2336 to 2300.

Thx ... i changed the max rate allready ... but still having the lag ... not constantly but always on a bad time ofcourse ...

I was wondering if sp2 for xp could be a suspect to all of this ...

i just reinstalled the server with xp sp1 ... and we will see ...i will let you know ...

As long as the SP2 firewall is either turned off, or, you've allowed for connection, it shouldn't be a problem. However, if you're still running a server AND playing on it, I'm not surprised that your getting lag.

okay i am getting freaked out here ... :-)

when we started with COD, somewhere beginning of the year, we had our own server (at home) with 12 people connecting without any form of lag.
And not dedicated, i was playing on the same machine, that time it was a simple pIII with 256 MB.

Then came the fixpacks ... 1.2 / 1.3 /1.4 ... and UO.

Now we can only play with 6 to 7 clients connected, and there comes the lag ...

Does the lag came together with the fix packs and with UO ...??? Who knows ...

Going back to COD without the fix packs is a bit difficult, everybody upgraded allready, so this we cant test anymore ...

Then i have been reading posts that DSL (6Mb DL 512Kb UL) would be better then cable internet (6Mb DL 512Kb UL), is this correct and why? Where is the difference ...?

btw ISP is telenet, Belgium.

Hope someone can provide me with some answers ... thx 2 yall

Good luck with your home server. I really think you should invest your time doing something else. This version of United Offensive, atm, will not allow people to run servers at home, without some sort of lag. Sorry mate, but tweak all you want, it will not help ya one bit.
