I heard that the people responsible for making COD are the same people who wrote MOHAA. If this is true I would imagine that they probably are NOT happy with the direction that EA took it with SH and BT. :x My guess is that they would probably like nothing more than to stick it to EA. With Activision giving them a chance they obviously know exactly what they need to do to create a game to beat the pants off of MOH (being the ones who originally wrote it). I never thought I would like a game more then the MOH series, but I have to admit if my facts are acurate I can't see how this game won't be a masterpiece. Does anyone know how accurate my thinking is or am way off?

Yes, Infinity Ward is made of the same people that designed Medal of Honor. Considering the lack of support from EA Games and that Breakthrough is crap, I will be surprised if MOH is around this time next year.
CoD will definitely outshine MOH. The question is whether HalfLife II will overshadow CoD. They will both release about the same time. So, we'll see.
I know it is early, but the real question is "where does Infinity Ward go next?" Will they expand CoD or will they move on to other projects? Since CoD will go gold in a few days (last week they said "a couple weeks"), they must be thinking about what comes next.

Jersey, I think you called it exactly.
As for CoD competeing with HL2, are they not different crowds of players?? I mean, I played HL and enjoyed it and all. great game. But it's not WWII. It's like science fiction and stuff. Again, sure it's a great game, but I ain't heading to it with CoD being there. No CoD, probably hit HL2 since I am completely fed up with MOH/AA/SH/BT.
But, for the WWII enthusiast, HL2 has all the appeal of a Hillary Clinton speech. :pig:

LOL. I agree. I am just talking sales. If the game doesn't do very well sales wise, then IW and Activision may move to other things. I THINK it will be fine, but you never know.

oh, I got ya. well if I was them, I would go right for the jugular. follow up the release of CoD with a Pacific War themed game, with tons of new MP maps and stuff.
BAM!! Dead MOH. :x(

It would really be a shame to me if MOH series dies out. Allied Assault really turned my on to FPS games. When Spearhead came out I also enjoyed that but it has gotten too stale. Breakthrough demo was just the last straw for me. The maps they released were total spawn killing fests, and with the exception of the Enfield sniper rifle I wasn't impressed with the new weapons. Nor the Italian skins. Not worth even $20 in my eyes. Anyone know what COD will retail for? I'm guessing $50 or so.

I'll be sorry to see it die out also, but if COD is better than MOH I'm sure I won't feel bad long... well, maybe just feel bad about the fact that I never walk away from the pc. As for spending money on MOHBT... I got it and I'm ok with spending the money for it. It is just an extension of SH, and with all the modding going on we're hardly starving for new maps and skins. If we were perhaps BT would be a lot more exciting for us. We can't really blame EA for that. Anyway, I'll give EA another $30. MOH gave me a ton of fun over the past few years, but I'm ready for something new.

What I blame EA for is they still REFUSE to do anything about the cheating. The demo for BT wasn't out an hour before cheats were being used and new one written. Punkbuster or some other program would have taken care of it. But they refuse to pop for the money. They are on my list just below Sierra in terms of never buy from them again.....

You're right. I do blame EA for not addressing cheating. Since it is just an extension of SH I'm finding that my blood and avatar mods work fine with it. As does Crow King's auto kick. This being the case I can't see why the low-life cheat mods wouldn't work also. I have noticed that there is a pure filter in the game server list. Maybe, if pure is working you will be able to choose to play on pure servers. I had problems getting pure to work with SH though. Whatever the case, cheating is a huge problem, and I heard that it was being recognized by COD. Someone told me they read an article saying they will be working closely with PunkBuster. I thought I may have seen a wall hack last night on BT. This person kept running into walls, shooting at walls, and couldn't really find their way around a map even though the path ways were clear to me. I couldn't accuse them though because I had no proof. I just shook my head and played on.

I was/am a big fan of the original MOH:AA. I also know Spearhead was sort of a let down and breakthrough well I don't know. I'm still waiting for my copy from EA.
I can tell you this. MOHPA will and should be different. Now, is this too little too late. Only time will tell. CoD can only get EA to think real hard on what we the customers are looking for in a realistic WWII shooter.
One thing is for sure, CoD is going to be hard to beat and I predict CoD keeping up with HL2 and Doom3. Just scroll down thru the news posts and check out some of the quotes from the PC Gamer staff and the Carmack(sp?) himself.

I think the hardest thing for a new game to do is de-throne the king (MOH). COD seems to be well on it's way. I've never seen so much hype around a game that has yet to be released. By the time PA comes out I believe EA's goal will be trying to regain the throne... not keep it. In regards to the hype... If COD flops it may be the biggest let-down since Bin Laden's voice was heard again on tape after we thought we had him (well overstated, but you get my point). Another pitfall for MOH may be, EA has a very succesful line of sports games, they probably don't need this game that bad. They may just invest their time and money in going in another direction, rather then get into a pissing match with COD.
I thought MOH was the greatest game ever, but if somebody wants to come out with bigger and better that's fine by me.

the sad thing is that there is no reason, ZERO, why EA could not be forthcoming with a product like CoD, or even have it out already. The garbage coming out is sad. WHAT HAVE THEY DONE IN THE YEAR SINCE SPEARHEAD CAME OUT?!!?
Nothing. The *private* community has developed new maps and BETTER skins. Period.
There is no excuse. :x

You are correct sir....in my opinion...they should have had Pacific Assault out allready.......& they should have let modders do the rest...(with the old engine)..because, to me, SH & BT are nothing more than mods....and not very good ones at that..(allthough i say that, having paid for both & I would have been less critical of free downloads...hell anything free these days is fine by me.....ive tinkered around w/ a few pk3's...made myself a server-sided "extra ammo" .etc...(just added BT weapons to it today)..but thats the extent of it.....for me anyway)
I guess I mean to say, EA, with all thier resources, have let me down...AGAIN....and....AGAIN........booooo!!!!!

I would love to get inside someone's head at EA or any software company for that matter. Maybe any sales related to PC versions of their games is just considered a bonus. Maybe they just feel that since the communities can tweak and modify their software they shouldn't bother keeping up. Console games may be their focus. They can't be changed and modded as easily. I never really read what the console game owners have said about expansion packs to the MOH series. Do they like them more? They don't get to see all the new levels and skins the way we do. They HAVE to wait for an expansion. Are we just spoiled? Like I said, it's a point of view that I haven't looked at. Cheating probably doesn't happen on the console games. It may not be worth it to them to invest time and money on a problem that effects just one aspect of their sales. Maybe it's better spent on coming up with an expansion to a console game. I don't agree with it, but just maybe that's the way it is.
We all know that EA messed the game up. They rushed 2015 into finishing it so they could get it out in time. They added things to it that weren't needed and lag it down and have done nothing to deal with the cheating which happens from the loop hole left in it. Even given all that though, MOH will not die. For starters, not everyone has $50 to spare to go out and buy a new game. Clans who have a lot of time and money invested in MOH may not be so willing to drop it...at least not until they have a firm hold on COD and how it works server wise and anti-cheat wise.
What I am guessing EA is doing is waiting for IW and Activision to release COD in Novemeber. By January MOH player will be ready to move to COD. Do you really think the timing for the release of PA was by accident? I doubt it. EA will try to capitalize on MOH fame with the release of PA and try to draw back players that have left for COD. If they are smart and want to make money, they'll make sure that PA is at least equal to COD. If they don't then MOH will die out within 6 months I'll wager.

I think that COD is going to dethrone MOH and possible all other FPS for the next year. It is hard to say so yet, but COD looks like it could be one of the FPS to remember. I think that it will revolutionize the WWII genre. One game I think may get put down by COD is not MOH, but BF1942. I know that they are kinda different, but I think that EA is going down down down down down down. I got BT myself and I have to tell you it isn't as bad as you think. The maps run much better than in the demo and their is not much lag.

What would make COD just that much better would be the inclusion of the allowdownload command. That was one mistake that I believe could have made MOHAA just that much better. I dont how many people simply gave up on MOHAA purely on being stale. Sure you could download them but most people didnt even have a clue and the servers that ran them lacked players to keep it going. Well here's hoping for the best.

Our server would have a great bunch of players on board playing a stock map. Then, to keep the game fresh, we added a few custom maps and made every effort to promote that fact. Still to this day...almost 3 months later, when a custom map comes up almost the entire group is gone and we get stuck with 3 vs 4 battles, all against ourselves.
Heinz
09-26-2003, 01:59 PM
Same with our server!! We have tried to squeeze in some customs, even ones that have been out forever!, but they still drop so many players. It's frustrating!
Crazy man, crazy. :dis:

Same problem here. Won't allowing downloads just take up too much badwidth? If it doesn't use a lot, then won't the downloads just take too long? Especially if you switch maps and 4 or 5 people need it. I would think you would have to download it from a server outside of the game server. Maybe once your game realizes that you don't have a map that is running on a server, it could request a link to the map from the game server before it disconnects. You would just have to predefine what link to go to for what maps on the game server. Then all the game server would have to do is send a small .txt file with a link.
This is all could should would. When it comes down to it... what the hell do I know.

It would be nice if the game could do the same as Raven SHield does for custom maps. You can set it so the client downloads them directly from the server, witch is very slow, or you can redirect the game to a ftp/http server and it downloads from there. It works like a charm and is really fast. Don't know if this will work with the Q3 engine though.

09-26-2003, 02:57 PM
Staley, I think that would be the best idea. Have you redirectd to an ftp server. This way your rented game server does not slow down with everyone dl maps. It would also keep costs down

That is great news then. I can't imagine them adding it to one game and not another. Especially if they are aware of the cheating problem with MOH series. I'm sure they are also aware if they can put a product out that makes cheating harder, honest and clean players will flock to their game.

Well....I really am looking forward to CoD, but I haven`t completely given up on MOH.
Remember, there will be a new MOH that will "new" (supposedly)from the ground up. Pacific Assault will give us MOH diehards SOMETHING, albeit to little to late. It looks to possibly be MOH`s last gasp for life. From the Pacific Assault screenshots I have seen so far.....I am unimpressed. I smell death in the air. To bad it had to be such a great game that EA poisoned. A series that held so much promise after giving us AA.....then the suffering began with SH.....looks like life support is needed after "offering" us BT.
EA cares about nothing other than a good quarterly stock report. Breakthrough proved that. (It is pointless to discuss the short commings of that game) CoD will most likely spell death for MOH(probably why BT is so screwed and seemingly rushed).....it appears that EA may try to ressurect the MOH series with Pacific Assault. Look for yourselves at the screenshots.

I loved the Hoss Cartright pic. :!: And I really liked the shots of the guy downing Zeros with a Thompson! :?
With games like Half-Life 2, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.S.Oblivion Lost :!: and several others on the horizon....I don`t see MOH ever being what it once was.
The only thing I see comming ashore with this Pacific Assault is alot of disappointment.

This is unbelievable. Is there any chance this game won't be great? I have never seen sooo much hype around a game in my life. I guess it will be hitting stores Friday and Saturday. I bet by Sunday there will be 200 servers.
Pacific Assault looks like it could be fun....but one has to wonder about the multiplayer aspect. Also, people who run PA servers will most likely lose access to existing maps since it is a new game and not an expansion. One of the great things about extending AA to SH and BT is the wide assortment of maps available...the anyone with the game can play. Custom maps are fine until the server hits one and the server goes from 20 to 2 people.
However, I am already planning to convert my SH server to CoD as soon as the LINUX server is available. I was going to convert to Breakthrough, but have yet to see any info for LINUX, so I checked out CoD and was blown away. I suspect CoD will offer LINUX support before Breakthrough does and Breakthrough has over a month head start. Sad, really.
All in all, BT is a much better game than SH was. I've played both the SP and MP of it and have greatly enjoyed it. I think people are quick to dismiss a game because it's by "EA" or because they didn't like Spearhead. Don't write a game off as not being worth it just because of who made it or what a past version was like.
Jerseysax
10-21-2003, 12:20 PM
I kind of thought the opposite. I thought SH was great once they worked the bugs out. I think BT has issues. They need some sort of patch. By that time, CoD will be out and it won't matter anymore. BT had an uphill battle to climb since the day the demo came out. I was hopeful though, because I seem to remember the spearhead demo being horrible. The one or both maps (I can't quite remember) didn't even release with the SP expansion. I'm thinking maybe they pulled it or them to work out the lag. They showed up again in the first patch. Anyway, I figured I would love BT no matter what, but I hardly ever play it. They screwed up a good series with crap.
EA does have a great line of sports games. I'll give them that.
