View Full Version : Client connect rate?
First off, i'm pretty noob when it comes to gameserverhosting..
Heres the problem :
When the server is full with 24 peeps on it the ping rised significantly for almost everyone on the server...
What I dont understand is the connect rate the clients are getting..
Ive set it to max 8000 pr. client in the cfg but it seems like the server is not enforcing this? (set sv_maxrate "8000")
When I run the status command in the console it shows that most players get a 25000 connect.. Does anyone know if this is the actual connect the client is getting or is it just showing what each client has their connection set to? If they get a 25000 connect it's understandable that the ping rises due to the fact that my line aint "fat" enough..
Anyone have any ideas/experience with this?

if you have the server set too put out 8000 then thats all they will get
now the other problem is each person should set his or her rate too what ever the server runs
dont they will lag on there end because there pc is constantly asking for more rate then they will get
as far as the status goes that is what there rate is set at but "if " you have it set in the server config then that 2500 means nothing
because all your server will give them is 8000
Thx for the reply..
It makes sense that the status in the console shows what each client has set their rate to. And not what their actually getting.
I checked the bandwith utilization while the server was full, it used about 70% of available UL bandwith..
So what i figure, either my DSL line/modem/router handles multiple connects poorly or the problem might be that my hardware isnt keeping up?
It's a AthlonXP1500+ machine with 512MB RAM.
Anyone know of recommended hardware specs for 24 player server getting low ping times?

The key to setting maxrate (and, number of players) is to find out what the UPLOAD speed of your DSL line is, and use the calculation in the link here: http://www.codadmin.com/nuke/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=6.
To find out your UPLOAD speed go to http://www.dslreports.com/stest. I wouldn't take just one sample...do several over a few days (you are allowed 4 per day as a freebee).
Also, read this: http://www.olddogvt.net/cod-firewall/.
I have set the maxrate to 8000 and 24 players witch should be well below my actual 2mbit upstream, and according to bandwith monitor it does not utilize the full 2mbit. So it seem that Ive set the maxrate correctly.
But what made me unsure was that the console showed that clients had 25000 connect. That was before I checked the bandwith utilisation, if they infact had a 25000 connect I would think that bandwith monitor would show a constant 100% utlilisation of the UL rate?
So that makes me wonder if the server is powerful enough to host 24 players? As an example peeps having about 100 ping when its not full, get about 170-200 when full. Ive disabled PB as that is stated elsewhere in this forum to cause lag.

Well, 1.5MB (which what the calc works out to @ 8000 and 24 players) isn't *well* below 2MB, but it is still below, I'll grant you. You must be paying a fortune for SDSL with 2MB upload... :!:
The machine itself could use some RAM (double it at a minimum), but it should handle it ok. I've found that the lag and ping issue is almost always due to your upload speed, though. Maybe back off to 16 or 20 players and try that??
The 25000 has been explained above...it's what your clients are TRYING to connect at, but the maxrate limits them to what you have set. Another thing to look at is frames-per-second...drop that to 20 (if it isn't already there).
The other thing is to periodically test your DSL line using dslreports. You may not be getting what your paying for. What bandwidth monitor are you using?
Thx for the input OldDog :)
Ive tested the DSL line to between 1.8-1.9 UL
So im not getting everything that I pay for, but I can live with that since they were the first to deliver DSL to me :)
I use Bandwith monitor Pro (http://www.bandwidthmonitorpro.com) seems pretty accurate, of course it measures all TCP/IP traffic so I have to make sure there's no LAN traffic at the moment I "read" the rate..
I was thinking about ordering another 512MB module, I tried raising the com_hunkmeg to 256, but that used more memory than I had installed. So I backed down to 192MB, dont know if this has any effect at all though.
It isnt exactly "laggy" as in a lot of packet loss, its more high ping thats the problem.

Actually, 1.8-1.9MB on a "delivered" 2.0MB is pretty damned good...you always get some loss.
