We rented a jolt server a few months back, its been great. The server is always stable and the support has been good. I’ve posted loads of questions on this forum about configuring the server.cfg file and using auto messages from the console. I’ve had superb responses (thx Anex) :!: to all my questions but me implementing them on our server has been another matter altogether.

In the past when I used FTP to get at our server.cfg and other files (map rotations and stuff like that). I’ve been editing a server.cfg file which was in \clanaa\cod\main but after making certain changes to that file and restarting the server it didn’t pick up those settings and I was completely baffled. After emailing Jolt I didn’t get a satisfactory response as to why ?

However it seemed when another clan member used FTP to look at the server he could actually see another server.cfg (and all the juicy PB files) in a completely different folder; \clanaa\.callofduty\main. In this folder is the actual server.cfg that the server is reading !! I can’t see this folder by default I’ve got to physically type in the .callofduty part to it in the path field on the FTP, which is why I’ve been getting completely confused !!

1st question – why is there two server.cfg files in two locations and why does one only apply?
2nd question – why can’t I see this .callofduty folder by default? Is it my settings in the FTP program im using?
3rd question – why does the folder begin with a fullstop, does this indicate it’s a ‘hidden’ folder?
4th question - why the hell don't Jolt make this clear when we rented the dam thing !? If I knew what I know now I wouldnt have had so many headaches

We used Jolt a long time ago, never really liked them as there C/S was terrible.

We are now on www.superservers.co.uk and i have to say they are the best servers i have played on ;)

1st question – why is there two server.cfg files in two locations and why does one only apply?

A lot of GSP's have multiple setup configurations that they simply propagate onto all their servers and simply choose which configuration setup to use (generally it's on a server group location or OS bases (i.e. Linux gets this one, Win32 gets that one, this location uses this, that one uses the other, etc.).

2nd question – why can’t I see this .callofduty folder by default? Is it my settings in the FTP program im using?

All depends on how you connect. When I had a Linux server I could not set that folder either but another of my friends could. When connecting via FTP, just make sure you specify the folder location during the connection and you'll be fine.

3rd question – why does the folder begin with a fullstop, does this indicate it’s a ‘hidden’ folder?

Not sure, not as familiar with the CoD Linux setup.

4th question - why the hell don't Jolt make this clear when we rented the dam thing !? If I knew what I know now I wouldnt have had so many headaches.

Jolt has made a LOT of progress from when I first heard of them; but they are still no where near the level of access most NA based GSP's are. The Jolt admins I've spoken with, however, always seemed nice and fairly knowlegable.

Hope that clarifies a little more...

np it's nice to help people; it's even nicer when you see the people you help turn around and help others (i.e. some of your recent replies to other people's problems).

All part of Rudedog's master plan, people helping people helping people....that and something about taking over the world - though that could just be the Pinky and the Brain intro I'm remembering :P

Yea I have replied to a few questions recently.

I like to do my bit, the way I see it is if I post a question, I'm hoping for an answer and when I get it, I like to return the favour.

Yes, the "." before the folder (or file name) in Linux means it's hidden.

1st question – why is there two server.cfg files in two locations and why does one only apply?
Our standard install involves the server config (codserver.cfg) going in /cod/main/. If there's a file called server.cfg in .callofduty/main it's been added later by the customer.

2nd question – why can’t I see this .callofduty folder by default? Is it my settings in the FTP program im using?
It depends on your ftp client and how you have it configured. Some ftp clients show hidden folders by default, some ftp clients can be configured to show hidden folders, some ftp clients can't.

3rd question – why does the folder begin with a fullstop, does this indicate it’s a ‘hidden’ folder?
Yes that denotes a hidden folder. It's a standard feature of every Q3 based game, fs_homepath will default to a hidden folder for security.

4th question - why the hell don't Jolt make this clear when we rented the dam thing !? If I knew what I know now I wouldnt have had so many headaches
There are guides built into webadmin and guides I compiled on our main COD site. If you have any problems you only have to ask, just due to the size of Jolt's customer base it would be impossible to manage support queries via email, they all need to go via the webadmin (http://www.webadmin.jolt.co.uk). Details on that should be in your welcome email.

[quote]Jolt has made a LOT of progress from when I first heard of them; but they are still no where near the level of access most NA based GSP's are.
Not sure what you base that comment on. Jolt clanservers come with ftp and ssh access, along with a webadmin system for basic configuration changes and support queries. The webadmin system is a relatively new addition but ftp and ssh access have been provided for years, short of giving customers root I can't think of any more access they could get.
