Maybe this will encourage some console users to consider using their PCs more and get more into PC Gaming - or maybe I'll finally get to play Alan Wake like I originally planned to when it was a PC game (but doubt I'll pay a subscription to do so...lol)...:p

The title says it all, you will be able to play Xbox360 games on your PC with Windows 8, Microsoft’s latest and greatest operating system.
Although there isn’t much information about the features or limitations, one thing is for sure: You are able to play Xbox360 games by simply placing the game disk into your DVD tray.

Remember, this is Microsoft we’re talking about. Something this generous doesn’t come without a price tag. To play your Xbox360 games online, you need to dish out some cash to access a ‘live’ feature, something similar to Xbox Live, but more tuned for PC’s.

With the declining number of Xbox exclusives, this is a step in the right direction for Microsoft in terms of economics. Opening up an entirely new market without having to spend a cent is by far the most lucrative thing Microsoft has announced and here’s why:

No reproduction – Microsoft doesn’t have to produce new game disks or cases for its new platform. Players can simply buy new or used Xbox360 games. Future games will just have a new graphic on them stating it’s ‘Windows 8 compatible’
Subscriptions – Xbox Live alone makes up the majority of revenue for Microsoft. If the company can get the service on not only 1, but 2 platforms, profits can double. Pair that up with a DRM platform similar to Steam and EA’s Origin and your product line is guaranteed to earn profits.
Marketing – Microsoft is no stranger to marketing, having spent over $500m on Kinect marketing alone, you can expect Windows 8 to have an extreme presence in the media in the upcoming year. Announcing the compatibility of Xbox360 games on the PC via OS purchase is enough to pull a large chunk of the gamer demographic.

Although there’s a lot of speculation, there’s even more questions being asked. “Why would you buy Xbox360 consoles if games work on PC?” “Why would I want to buy the Xbox360 version of games?” Although I don’t have any information upon Microsoft’s new console, I can safely say that the Xbox360 is being put aside and a next generation console is in the works. So, if you have a large 360 collection and a mighty PC, you’re going to enjoy Windows 8. Stay tuned for more information.

Why support PC gaming when you can turn PC's into XBOX's?, I can see how console users with Live accounts can benefit from this though.

I can't see this happening since it could open up the platform for cheating, piracy etc etc.

So the base install requirements for Window 8 will be the requirements of an Xbox 360 so that there will be no compatibility problems? Of course that also makes you wonder if you will be able to run true 1080p or higher if you are playing these games. The only way I see it working it that it will run basically an Xbox 360 emulator and you won't be playing a PC game at all really since it won't be configurable. Maybe they have some magic up their sleeves though.

XBOX360 is a PC. Just locked down nicely by Microsoft. Easy for them to unlock. With that said, i would imagine that it would equal to some sort of an emulator as many things done differently, especially DX/GFX. Anyway, its a rumor and i dont think its going to happen.

I think it's pure speculation, that said I think it would be easy to do. Set it up like a VirtualBox running XBox in Win-8 much like they do with Win-7 and Windows XP. Running it in a dedicated Virtualbox that emulates the a PC that you install Windows XP on to. It dosn't thank a massive leap of the imagination to suggest that you can do the same with XBox.

I use Virtual PC's all the time for testing Linux distro's and such.

But as I said even if it's easy to do doesn't mean they will do it. I don't see the business model for Microsoft...

But, if the developers are actually writing straight to the hardware in Xbox now as the recent DX debate suggests...can an emulator still accomplish smooth gameplay? Seems like you might run into tough issues.

I think Pen hit it. PC 360 will be an emulator just like XP on Win7. Expect certain hardware requirements but when you consider how badly dated the XBox is these days, that shouldn't be so hard to run under emulation and still get adequate performance with state of the art PC hardware (and not just high end).

If I can install windows in a virtualbox on my Linux computer and then run a 3D game on that emulated windows computer, MS should be able to get an XBox emulator to run in Windows 8.

I don't think that there is any technical reason stopping it from happening. I just don't see why you would want to? I can see that MS have a bit of a problem with Windows 8. The reason to upgrade Windows has always been to get away from it's predecessor. Thing is window7 is rather good, why would you upgrade to Windows8? Instead of just being "not the hated old version of Windows" windows8 has to stand out in some way.

A gimmick like playing XBox game on your PC might be a way to get some to upgrade.

That still doesn't answer my question of why would you want to? XBox games are universally inferior to PC, even when it's the same game. They are more expensive, it costs money to play them online. I guess "if" you have a stack of XBox games and you would like to play them on your laptop or the next console is out and you don't want to feel like the pile of disks are going to wast, then it might be a reasonable idea.

First thought that came to mind as well. Those kids would have a field day with this on PC, and take greifing to a whole new lvl.
