Is it possible to run a COD-server from a, requirement-wise, underqualified desktop (PII/233Mhz/16MB video) through console commands only? I know it can be done in MOHAA but COD? I am trying to fix this old pc as a dedicated server but can somebody advise me on whether I should try it at all?
My first question is: WHY?
the CPU is way under powered, and RAM..you did not mention...
Yes it will run it but for like 2-3 players...
not to mention the bandwidth thing...broadband = 8 players.
SO this would seem to me to be a wate of your good efforts

My first question is: WHY?
Basically just for the fun of it. RAM is 128MB SDRAM. If it is a fact that only 2-3 players can log in (can this be ratified by other members?) I think I'd better stop trying... because no matter what system I configure, my broadband connection will not change.
Question remains; can a server be run by using console cmds only? :?:

Your only chance may be with a stripped version of Linux.
And yes you can run a server just with console commands (thats how a linux server works, there is no GUI stuff.)

Which LINUX-version could that be? I've got LINUX Mandrake 9 running on another system but I don't think it qualifies as 'stripped'?

Running a server on a 300mhz, 256, ram and 5200 rpm hd.
Works great with up to 10 players. More that 10 palyers it starts lagging.
My upload is 512 k/bs and im pretty sure that most of the lagging is caused by lack of CPU.
Im pretty sure you can do it.
Tweak your OS and redue to minimum of services, maybe put in more RAM. Console uses from 10-20 mb per connected player.
What upload you have?
Read some there what 128k/bs ul can handle about 6-8 players
