Where can I go check to see what games people are playing? Is this a service I need to pay for?

There are several systems none cover everyone and every game. Some look at servers, some at hours played. In most cases the servers have to be registered, so it only measures those. Some just look at the people using the particular service the users login.

To be honest your question lacks detail and it would be very helpful if you could add more information. Your question is far to vague to give a specific answer. What people? What games?

I can think of 2 top of my head: Raptr.com and Xfire.com - Both are free and shows player stats for multiple games.

You pretty much answered my question but I was looking for something that tells you how many players are currently logged in to any given FPS at one time. I came across X-Fire but like you said their stats are probably not for everyone, just people using their service.

As far as I know there is no "universal" system. There are several but none on them cover everything. Steam dose a good job but only for Steam games, XFire is good indicator can throw up some odd things. There are games that do not work well with XFire and the guys playing those just don't use XFire. So you will not see their stats.

I play quite a lot of ArmA:2 but XFire has not bothered to get it to work with the later versions. So simply I don't much use XFire these days. When I played BF:2 is was almost necessity to be running XFire. For Join Ops it never worked so, no users no stats...

Raptr hasn't the user base yet, Steam only works for Steam, GameSpy suffers the same issues. XFire is probably the best but none of them are more than indicators, nothing concrete.

You can try gametracker.com and simply count the pages by 25 servers a page or switch it to 50 a page

Battletracker.com has several games listed under the Servers tab - AA2 - AA3 - BF2 - BF2142 - BC2 - COD4 - COD5.

game-monitor.com - your server has to be registered, but they do give percentages of players to slots used to slots available.
