In part one of EA's Medal of Honor experience video series, titled Fallen Angel, there's a great deal of running, shooting, exploding, and colorful language. Last week at Gamescom, Crecente got to play through a level of Medal of Honor flying a gunship (http://kotaku.com/5616700/playing-through-medal-of-honors-apache-helicopter-level). Now EA lets us explore the more down-to-earth aspects of the title's gameplay, running and shooting.

I've done so much running and shooting in my lifetime that it's hard to distinguish one from the other. It would be an interesting experiment to strip the UI elements from the latest five or six modern-day military shooters and see if the uninitiated could tell the difference. The be completely honest, I might be hard-pressed.

Now show me what happens when a player dies in each game, and I become Mr. Wizard. I am a connoisseur of first-person shooter death. My mother always told me to find something I am good at and stick with it.

At least you get a compass thingy :p too bad BC2 didn't give us that.

"He's over there","where??","over there by the green house","which green house?","the two story green house to left of middle map!!","where??"

Hits Q.

"There"

The problem with BC2 hardcore is that it was an afterthought and all the functions necessary in it for teamplay were eliminated with the hud. Silly stuff like vehicle passenger lists were not really worth clearing off the hud. Spotting is an essential part of battlefield games and minimap 2d spotting needs to be on in most hardcore servers to make it work.

Wish granted. Its a MP trailer.

Yeah noticed my oops on the second viewing. I just assumed a person progressing straight through a map like that was playing against AI. So I guess this was scripted?

Ok, so they moved the score point text a little farther away from the player's line of sigh (higher) which is an improvement, but now, it overlaps with the objective status bar, how this type of thing gets overlooked is beyond me, it's not game-breaking or a big deal, if anything it's very minor, but still, this is supossed to be a AAA title, lets see what else they tweak before release.

Adding recoil was one of the stated goals after the beta feedback was taken.I am not a recoil purist....but the guns here look like freaking aimbots.

Well the F2000 has nearly no vertical recoil in BC2, just a lot of spread/spray ( 6:45 in this video shows comparable http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnhbFgfadP8&feature=related). It does climb but a tiny bit in the MOH video. I think your best look in this vid is at around 1:45. You see him start to really hammer that G3 in semi auto and can watch the crosshairs climb over the head of the guy he is shooting.

Far less than say the SVU in BC2 at that rate of fire, but still clearly recoiling.

I always find this interesting. I am personally in favor of recoil in games to make guns feel and behave differently. Yet, from what I hear and read from people who have fired NATO 5.56x45mm chambered weapons, there is very little vertical recoil. It is mostly direct backwards in most contemporary weapons systems. That sort of effect is very visible on the F2000 model in game.

This is probably why 7.62mm guns are a must have now so that there is some difference between the M16/G36/F2000/L85A2/SCAR-L/M416 and other assault rifles in games other than rate of fire. Still, AK-74 and An-94 systems both moved to smaller rounds than the ubiquitous AK-47 that every game designer loves to use for asymmetrical balance. Thus the G3, M14 EBR, and other 7.62s are finding their ways into games to create that "rifle" feel. Of course games like COD4 still reduce the G3 to a recoiless semi-auto pseudo sniper and the M14 in BC2 is a M1 Garand with more ammo since the rail systems are inaccessible and weight improvements are not really modeled in game. The Scar-H is often depicted as recoiless despite the larger round. Can't say I know any realism arguments about that system.

Once again, I find this a compelling argument for WW2 games. Less weapons are recoilless bullet hoses.

meh. I'm still not impressed. I tried the beta. Uninstalled it shortly after installing it. I really hate when they release video from consoles. The movement of the players looks so... hard... nothing like the freedom of a mouse and keyboard. I've never been a big fan of infantry. I've always liked the vehicles, so I'll probably be passing on this and waiting for BC2 Vietnam and BF1943 if it's ever released.

Same here. More of the same. You would mistaken this video for BFBC2 easily. Ill wait for reviews after release to make up my mind but already the Trusted GSP thing annoys me. None in Ireland :/

Actually I see a ton of improvements - but not sure its worth a $60 investment.

Yea looks better, but still too clunky for a twitch shooter. I guess its great if you are twiddling you thumbs to play it thou.

The only way this game may be worth the money and last for the pc community is if they would give us the dedicated public server files and the mod tools. We all know that's not going to happened since it's just a BC2 clone without the vehicles.

My hopes are for COD Black Ops and Red Orchestra: Heroes Of Stalingrad to give us what we want and need.

Actually it did have a vehicle in the beta (a Bradley). It was similar to BC2 with two major differences - to me the gameplay was smoother (e.g. better hit reg, smoother movement) but lost some of the fun of BC2 (e.g. lost most of the destructibility). Could have been called BC3.

The differences are bigger than that and will tell very clearly as it is played.

There is a true deathmatch mode with no vehicles.
There are killstreaks that reward camping in different ways.
The vehicles have very very limited routes and are practically on rails.
Weapons are largely factionalized and everyone isn't using the same overpowered flavor of the month (at least two different overpowered flavors of the month will be on maps ;)).
The "rush" mode in MOH is only one point at a time and without destruction the focus of the battle on a single point makes it faster paced and requires even more teamwork.
Damage is considerably higher in stock play and cover is very important considering how easy it is to be killed. Maps are designed to reflect this and there are fewer two foot high walls that leave players' heads exposed.
Those are just the things off the top of my head. While I don't think it is wildly different from all the other shooters out there, saying MOH is BC2 is like saying COD5 is COD4 or BF2142 is BF2.

I don't understand this feeling that all games on the same engine are exactly the same game. They may feel similar, but any PC gamer familiar with the difference that minutia can make (weapons balance, a poorly positioned spawn on a map, tanks that take 5 rockets to destroy instead of 3, no jets versus nearly invulnerable death from the skies) should be able to tell what changing a lot of factors will do.

Otherwise we really are just playing point-and-click casual games.

I agree with you longer list of differences.

saying MOH is BC2 is like saying COD5 is COD4 or BF2142 is BF2.

Which is why I called MoH "BC3" - not just like BC2. It is different than BC2 - about the same difference as between CoD4 and CoD5.

From what I 've seen of BC2, this looks exactly the same. Why is it called MoH again???

Bah.

Same reason COD7 is called Black Ops and not MW2.5... ;)
