Activision Blizzard COO suggests we might see more than just maps released as DLC for Call of Duty: Black Ops.
Publishers are working hard to avoid losing out on potential sales due to the used games market. EA created the Online Pass (http://www.1up.com/news/continuing-battle-game-sales-online) earlier this year that would grant various features (depending on the game) to people who buy a new copy of the game, and THQ did the same thing with the latest UFC (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3173022) game. Activision is now looking to be more aggressive in trying to persuade gamers to opt for a new copy of its titles rather than saving a few bucks up-front by purchasing a used copy. During an investors call yesterday, Activision Blizzard COO Thomas tippl explained (via CVG (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=258926)), "We are still evaluating various possibilities for greater participation in the used-games business. What's been working the best so far is providing additional content and therefore limiting the supply to used games.
"So that's a proven strategy that we will continue. And any other initiatives, we will be talking about when we get closer to it."
It sounds as if launch investment (http://www.1up.com/news/call-duty-black-ops-activision), you can bet it's going to want to squeeze every last penny out of the game that it can.
Map packs might not be the only thing we see released as DLC for the game, as Tippl said, "Today [we have] more resources than ever dedicated to creating additional content for Call of Duty, whether that's map packs, whether that's game modes and the whole host of new [downloadable] features that we're going to talk about when we get close to the launch of Black Ops."
That's hardly confirmation of anything specific, but with how successful (http://www.1up.com/news/20-million-call-duty-map) Activision has been with map packs, it seems incredibly likely that we'll be seeing more than just downloadable maps for Call of Duty at some point.
