EALA Medal Of Honor Team Dons New Studio Name
'Danger Close'

by Chris Remo - July 22, 2010

http://www.raidersmerciless.com/images/danger-close_sm.png With the reinvention of its FPS franchise Medal of Honor, Electronic Arts' Los Angeles studio is sprucing up its identity as well. As of last night, the team has adopted the name "Danger Close Games (http://dangerclosegames.com/)," a brand it says represents "pushing the boundaries and taking chances."

Like Visceral Games, the Redwood Shores, California-based internal group behind Dead Space and Dante's Inferno, Danger Close Games doesn't encompass all of the teams at its physical location. EALA also includes a mobile team, a music game-oriented team, and a real-time strategy team. Right now, Medal of Honor is the only game the Danger Close studio has in development -- but that could change over time.

"For us, rebooting Medal of Honor and taking it out of World War II into the current fight in Afghanistan is a lot like what we've done with the studio," executive producer Greg Goodrich told Gamasutra. "It's a refresh. It's an opportunity. It's a way to get our own identity."

EALA has had some tough years recently, with multiple teams laid off or heavily downsized, but Goodrich says those woes are behind the studio, and the new name is reflective of the team's forward-looking attitude.

"It doesn't feel like we need to be reinvigorated. It feels like we already are," he said. "The deeper meaning of Danger Close is, that, yeah, we got through those times, but we've come out of it. We've got a great game we feel is going to do well."

"Danger close" is a military term used when soldiers call for close-proximity fire, not long-range bombardment. Goodrich, who also spoke to Gamasutra in a longer interview to be published in the coming weeks, says it represents the studio's attitude in deciding to set the new Medal of Honor in a current conflict, with characters heavily influenced by modern soldiers.

"When an individual is calling in for danger close fire, it's the decision to take a chance, rather than sit back and call in from afar," he said. "For our team, 'danger close' is about pushing the boundaries and taking chances on telling a story we felt needed to be told. It may be controversial, but we felt it needed to be told, and we're telling it with respect and authenticity, to shine a light on these guys."

According to Goodrich, the name's origin was one of serendipity, not committee meetings.

"A few names had been thrown around," he recalled, "but then Rich Farley, our senior creative director, was playing the game at his desk and, right then, we heard one of our characters, Jimmy Patterson -- the grandson of Jimmy Patterson from the World War II era of Medal of Honor -- scream out, 'Danger close! Danger close fire!'"

"We said, 'I think Jimmy Patterson just told us what to name our studio.'"

Danger Close? Just not feeling it. Pink Elephant would have been a better name.

I think its sad that EALA has to resort to changing their name to get some publicity on their new game. Honestly if this were April 1st I would be absolutely certain this were a prank announcement.

And we've heard the whole "we have a great game and we're excited to bring it" hype before, along with the "we've put our problems in the past" tag line.

Well aren't we a cheery bunch. I am guess that if the story was about how the MoH team recieved ergonomic office chairs so they could be comfortable while serving us more, we could turn that into horrible news.

I just read this piece today http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/29292/Analysis_Is_The_Game_Industry_A_Happy_Place.php

This part seemed particularly relevant

Core gamers are demanding, entitled, obnoxious, sexist forum trolls. Of course, that’s not entirely true, and it’s probably not even a small part of the picture. But it sure seems like a sufficient summary sometimes from the view of a games journalist, who’s tasked with navigating the gap between an unhappy developer culture and a consumer culture that seems equally toxic.

Hahaha - You say one thing and do another enough times, and you get to the point where no one will believe you, and anything you do will be met with cynicism and contempt. Cause and Effect.

Look at the state of politics in the US. We've been BSed and played by most of our politicians for so long that many have zero faith in anything it does, says, or is. I mean, does anyone actually BELIEVE when a politician says, "No new taxes"? No, they simply accept that that is what a politician HAS to say. Same has become true for many game developers with few exceptions.

Now where is my torch and pitchfork...?

Danger Close huh? I will tell you what I am not close to doing and that is pre-ordering or purchasing the new MOH.

I will tell you what kind of danger is close and that is all these damn publishers like Activision and now EA hopping on the bandwagon to put out crappy games and charge us $59.99 instead of the usual $49.99 like back in the day.

Oh how I wish there was such a thing as Medal of Honor Allied Assault Source made by Valve... I guess I can only dream... NVG_side

And who made it a rule that after MOHAA every freaking FPS game has to have no open and close doors? I mean seriously... WTF bring it back already!

Add to that it's less game for more money. Last 3 cod games had 13+ maps on release and more added via map packs (yes real ones). Looking at the leaked maplist (http://pastebin.com/918a907Z) for moh we will get about 9 maps but they won't support all game modes like BC2.

Oh how I wish there was such a thing as Meda of Honor Allied Assault Source made by Valve... I guess I can only dream...

Would be nice if Valve hired the team behind Insurgency (http://www.insmod.org) and put some man power behind it.

Would be nice if Valve hired the team behind Insurgency (http://www.insmod.org) and put some man power behind it.

The original team is gone. Most of them were hired away by other groups, the two with the core vision for the game were both sorta forced out at different times. Both have tried to come back to take over and lead the project, but the current team believes they have it under control.

The game suffered from the same issues as most AAA. Too long between patches, alienating the community, ignoring feedback, and developer infighting. The current devs have barely done anything and are working on a mythical Beta 3.0 that will change the engine and add a theatre.

Would be better if Valve bought the intellectual property...except that it is completely unoriginal and now would fight directly with MOH.
