Single player wont run with disk

For some reason, when I put disk 1 into my cd rom, and proceed to play single player, it tells me to put the correct cd into the drive. When I put disk 2 into the drive, it tells you you need disk 1 in drive to play single player. Why does this happen.
I have the 1.4 patch in. I never tried single player with any of the other versions yet. I understand 1. 4 is a beta. Anyone else get this?
I had better luck with my no cd patch in, but the game would always go black at a certain point in single player using the no cd patch. And id have to restart computer. So I took it out to run it with my cd, now I get this not correct disk problem.

The 1.4 patch is not a beta. I have the same problem, though. I had A120 set up and it caused this problem in the past but it's long gone. I also checked the DMA settings on the CDROM drive but it's OK, too. Anyone have any other ideas?
