This is something we've known for about 4-5 years. Back in the early days of Medal of Honor and Call of Duty, we ran polls asking what our members ages where, along with a few other questions.
Back then the average age was 36-38, with a monthly disposable income of about $125 for gaming. Back then most, if not all went to running your server(s).
NPD (http://www.npd.com/press/releases/press_100527b.html) is reporting the following when it comes to PC gamers:
The average age of gamers increased slightly over last year from 31 years of age in the 2009 study to 32 years in this year’s study. Avid PC Gamers and Offline PC Gamers, comprising 11 percent and 8 percent of the gaming population, respectively, are the oldest segments with an average age for both of 42 years.
Someone should inform the publishers that we're a lot older and the 13 year old marketing and communications (if any) are what annoys us the most. Then again how long did it take them to realize that the multi-player side of the game was where the money is?

Most of the guys I play games with on pc are about 30-45. I have one person on my ps3 that is over 20 years old. I'm 18 and yet console gaming just doesn't do it for me. I only turn it on to charge the controllers for my brother.
Anyway, interesting statistics.

40 years old here... I also find it really interesting that when people argue online that they use words like "pwn" and "noob" and other colorful metaphors.
...yet a greater portion is in that "mature age" percentile :D.
AND, most of the arguments are about age... :) "What are you like 12!?"

I.m almost 44 and the the majority of guys in our clan are around this age but we do have a couple of guys that are near senior status. Don't let that fool you because they can still get it done big time. We play tactical bolts on WAW and their shots are just as good as the younger guys. The older guys tell great stories and you can learn a lot from them by just listening to them.As far the metaphors go , does pwn mean own? I remember first seeing the word noob in MOHAA and it still applies to some of these jokers you run across .

I'm starting to feel quite young?!? When I was 42 I was mostly playing ET:Quake Wars, then CoD:4 came out in the final quarter and it was as if no other game had ever been released!
I recently tried playing some Quake Wars, the long term players have the tack-ticks worked out so well a map that used to take 30 minuets to complete is done in less than five! You barely have time to scratch your arse and you are looking at the load screen for the next round! OMG WTF just happened! it over already...
As for CoD:4 I think I may have to reinstall it.

Well i guess im way younger that you lot! 32 here and gaming for last 15-20 years... I too would easily believe that survey, not many youngster are into buying rigs > 500$ to play PC Games, they use their dad's rig!!
My dad, who is 59 also plays COD and other FPS as do a lot of his friends of the same age.

I'm slightly older than the average I guess. I'm 51 and still love to play and map. I have the income to buy a game if it interests me but since I only play games like Call of Duty it sure does reduce the amount of games that I buy.
I have never owned any of the newer consoles and will stick by my PC. The higher cost of the PC over the consoles is not even a factor for me because I use the PC for more than just gaming. Besides that, if you buy a higher end computer then you are not buying a new computer so often because it will stay current longer. My current rig is going on 3 years old and works just fine maxed out on all current games that I play. I may have to lie to the wife, shed a tear maybe, and convince her that I need to buy newer.......:D
