I had a guy get kicked last night for a cvar violation. The cvar was the r_gamma setting
In my PB config, I had limits at 0 and 2. Let me paste from the log here:
[ 04.21.2004 22:53:40] VIOLATION (CVAR) #9001: ^xxxxxx(slot #2) Cvar r_gamma = 2.062500 [xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx(-) xxxxxxx:28960]
[04.21.2004 23:04:51] VIOLATION (CVAR) #9001: ^xxxxxx(slot #3) Cvar r_gamma = 2.062500 [xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx(-) xxxxxx:28960]
He adjusted his in-game brightness down a little bit, and it stopped kicking him for it.
My question is this. What should the max r_gamma be set to in pbconfig.cfg?
Below is from my punkbuster settings config file
pb_sv_cvar r_gamma in 0 2.0
pb_sv_cvar r_intensity in 0 1.5

well i will be setting all my cvars the same as a stock settings
that came with the game config
so that way it wont be a problem
and most all will see the game the same

But I guess my question is this-
What is the min/max allowable r_gamma settings? What is the value of r_gamma if somebody slides their in-game brightness level all the way to the right?
And how do we allow for different video card manufactures variances? I am sure there are different gamma settings between an ATI and an Nvidia card, even with all things being the same on a computer it would probably result in different r_gamma values.

look at your
config_mp in the main cod folder and it will tell you
Please don't set limits to r_gamma; that's ENTIRELY a user preference. If they want to walk around with the sun in their eyes effect, let them. Besides, everyones system is differenct. On my old system, I used to have a gamma of about 2.6 to see anything; with my new system, I run at about 1.4, 1.5.
Setting a high r_gamma means nothing, we can all get the same effect by increasing the brightness of our monitors.
As the ol saying goes, "just because you can do a thing doesn't mean you should do a thing".
I suggest you wait and see what the AC people for the various leagues or cheatpolice come up with before you start messing around with this stuff.

I'm not "messing" with it.
It was in a pre-build PB config i picked up at IWnation that had that cvar in it. That config had it capped at 2.
It kicked somebody for it, so I wanted to know if there was a cap.
Yeah I've seen the same config, just add "//" in front of that line, it really shouldn't be checked; there's no cheat or abuse there.

ok, thanks. I'll comment it out.. or just remove it.
Just wondering why another post there had somebody saying something like, "try going onto a PB server with r_gamma set at 15"
Somebody must have just been trying to be sarcastic.
lol
If someone wants to walk around with a big white screen, I say all the more power too them - can you imagine how much burn out they would get after playing for an hour...hello major headaches lol

How come no one answered Parrot's original question about the acceptable values for r_gamma?
Anyway, they are 0-3.
Unless you are a PB expert (meaning an admin on the PB forums or something like that), I'd trust how PB is set up and not comment that line out. Just change it to:
pb_sv_cvar r_gamma in 0 3.0
I suspect the reason it's there is that it's not possible to set that value outside those ranges using normal methods, but hacks can probably change that value in memory while the game is running and that might allow players to see things they wouldn't normally see. Like setting it at 10 or something could cause all textures to disappear and allow you to see through walls (or something like that).
For more info on the r_gamma value, go to the CoD Console Variables Page (http://www.boodizm.net/cod/cvars.asp).
r_gamma
Default value: 1
Acceptable values: Number (0-3)
Increase the brightness of your screen by increasing this value. Can be any decimal value from 0-3, ie 0.7, 1.5 and 2 are all valid gamma settings.
