Changes necessary for PC version of FrostbiteThe Battlefield franchise has a long and successful history of allowing the community to express themselves by modding the game itself. DICE has had a very strong and deep commitment to the modding community in the past; and it seems that when Battlefield Bad Company 2 was released, it was as if almost overnight a switch was flipped when the company chose to no longer support modding.

Actually, the situation has more to do with the Frostbite engine on the PC that is used to power Battlefield Bad Company 2 than the company’s decision to cease support of the modding community. As things stand today, the tools that are used to develop and create content on the Frostbite engine are just not there. What that means is currently in-house the company is not using a standalone toolset to develop for the Frostbite engine, and that they can’t simply package up the tools and make them available to the community.

DICE hopes at some point in the future to be able to provide the modding community with the necessary tools to develop content for the PC version of the Frostbite engine. While there is no time line on this as of yet, it is something that the studio is taking very seriously and they have it on their “to do” list. It is more a matter of time and resources at this point, from what we understand.

Can't see it being much for BC2, perhaps a map editor. Without server files your kinda limited on what you can do and right now many rsps won't even allow pb config file access. I doubt the ability to upload maps will be available with the current server policies.

Exactly and with BFBC2 being ranked only how can you do mods and or maps. Ranked servers are supposed to be run in pure mode so all ranked servers are the same.

I can see mod tools or mapping tools of some sort for UNRANKED servers but not for ranked ones. Well I take that back, maybe Dice/EA can "certify" said maps for ranked use. I do not know but who knows.

What's interesting here is that EA / Dice is smartly making these decisions regarding the ENGINE and not the GAME. In other words, once they do create the tools for the engine then it should be available for all games that run on that engine.

Because of the uncertainty of the timeline, I'm not sure if this will be available for BC2 but possibly for future titles based on the engine - - such as the new MOH or BF3.

I really don't blame them if it is all about the engine. I read a lengthy industry study once on what it means to develop an engine these days. There is a reason why everything seems like it is Unreal based. It is very very expensive and even if you plan on keeping it proprietary, keeping all the tools transferrable within a studio (as you can expect new workers/prjects to come and go during the life of an engine) is a rather tough task.

If Frostbite really is worthy technology (which as I play the BC2 SP more I find it truly is a rival to Crystek 2) than DICE and EA are right in using incremental steps in making sure they have tech that will last them a good long whlie.

Let's face it, DX11 engines are pretty sparse. It is probably much better to get it making you money as fast as possible so that you can fun the process of refining the tools. Crysis was sort of an all or nothing and you can see that in the new Crytek engine's multiplatform approach. 1943/ BC2 are nice trials for the big shows.

Would it really be that common for ranked servers to be moddable? I can't seem to remember that being a normal thing. I'm just a little surprised that's what you all latched on to for this.

I'm just happy to see they're saying something. Should put some concerns to rest.
