Hope for Modern Warfare 2?
By Kevin “Phenom” Joyce

A recent rumor has flourished that a patch coming soon will contain the capabilities to host dedicated servers for Modern Warfare 2. This patch would serve to let players skip over the flaws of peer to peer gaming on IW:Net and host servers with less-lag, similar to other games on the market that this approach has been quite successful for. What this could additionally do, however, is correct one of the major blunders in MW2’s design and possibly allow for some competition to surface in the game. Though some leagues have already surfaced using the clan system to join onto a peer hosted game, dedicated servers would allow for some type of competition Promod, be it Promod or Damn Mod, and for a more structured type of competition that leagues like CEVO and XPL have.

However, though it would be an interesting development to see what dedicated servers would be like and what types of competition mods would be popular with the game, I personally do not feel that dedicated servers will bolster an organized form of competition in the game for several reasons. First, the maps in Modern Warfare 2 do not seem to be well thought out for any kind of search and destroy competition. Though some maps are very well thought out and fun, most of the maps are too big for successful strategies to be put in place and carried out in a successful manner. For example, the map Derail is well thought out, but much too large to be fun in competition. MW2 counters this extreme with very small maps such as Rust or Highrise. There are perhaps four decent competition maps which I have seen which raises the question of how a league season would be set up with this few maps. I do not think that many people would rather play a league season repeating four maps, or substituting in modded maps from other games in. In addition to maps in the game being flawed, the game play has several flaws as well. For example, taking out the ability to lean means that it would be much harder for players to peek around corners, and giving this game a similar style of play to that of Counter-Strike Source, a game where competition has flourished and continues to grow to this day. In a competition between MW2, where competition is untested, and a game like Counter-Strike Source, which has had a following for years and is still one of the top played games online to date, Source will win every time.

The last and most crucial flaw of MW2 is the lack of a developer’s console to type in commands and make game configs to use in servers. Configs have become a staple of leagues and competition in all games, from Counter-Strike Source to Call of Duty 4. Also, without the developers console, in game /rcon commands for servers to restart maps, or change maps would have to be put in through an outside manager, creating a hassle for admins of servers to successfully moderate and set up a server.

In conclusion, though adding capabilities to set up dedicated servers would be overcoming one hurdle to establishing competition, there are many more that stand in the way of MW2 becoming a game with any serious competition or league play. However, to give Infinity Ward credit, showing that they are considering placing dedicated servers into the game shows that they obviously listen to the community, or are dedicated to supporting their products and continue to try and make them better, even after their release, which is becoming a rare quality in game companies today.

Not sure where this "rumor" came from but I have not heard anything in regards to patching MW2 to support dedicated servers.

They are doing fine with steam stats showing close to 100K clients playing online , or their waiting to connect to a host....

I would want to know more about the origin of the rumor before adding any more fuel to the fire. Anyone can start a rumor, and say anything, they are meaningless unless without corroboration.

Would love it if this one was true, but I am not gonna hold my breath. I think the whole motivation behind it was selling DLC on the PC, so doing this now would kill that before the first map pack/co -op missions or whatever is released. It would be sweet, and I think most of the clan would be behind setting up servers to replace COD4.

Great observation bacon,

They would have to wait to at least after the first $15 DLC for the PC. yeah I know past DLCs where cheaper but hey they need to screw the PC customer some more....

You know it could be as much as $20. Consisting of three or four mp maps, and around five spec ops missions.

I had a lot of fun with those, and taught my nephew about FPS pc gaming with them. I wish you had to option to play almost any SP campaign level with a friend like that.

With the money they made off this title they should do something big and free to show their appreciation to their fans. LOL I couldn't finish that sentence and keep a straight face. :D

Even if they did I still wont buy game out of principal. I wouldnt give that smug git 402 the satisfaction of another PC sale.

If MW2 got all the PC features that cod4 has, I would buy it in a heartbeat. BC2 is ok but it doesn't draw me in like MW1 and 2 does.

Speaking of no dedicated servers C&C4 is doing it too

Those looking to play the newest Command & Conquer on LAN are going to be disappointed. It was recently announced (http://www.destructoid.com/no-lan-or-dedicated-server-support-for-command-conquer-4-164070.phtml) that Command & Conquer 4 will include absolutely no LAN or dedicated server functionality. This is sure to be a blow to the tournament organizers who were planning to use C&C 4 in their events. The reason for this is apparently the leveling system used in the game.

I think i'd probably buy MW2 if they patched in dedis but only if enough of my friends decided to buy it too as online gaming for me is as much about the community as it is about the game.

Here's hoping

No dedicated servers, no mod tools, no lean = no sale

It's still a crappy console port even if they add dedicated servers. And if they decide to charge a DLC fee for dedicated servers??!?!??! Sorry, I'm not that much of a fool to pay more for an incomplete game.

So is BC2 but it had a few PC features. Still missing the developer console, public server files, mod tools, prone, screenshot function, battle recorder, connect via IP.

Sad part is this is where PC gaming is headed. Just console ports with a few features slapped in. I hope Valve doesn't screw us over like the other have.

I am glad you said that I was thinking the same thing, and yet everyone here at fpsadmin seems to be giving them a pass. I don't get it.

I think its just business, if they spend much money on the PC version then they would loose money. Sales suck for pc compared to the xbox, it just the way it is now.

That and Indie gaming. There are plenty of Indie developers making good games right now, unfortunately, not too many of them are FPS developers. League of Legends is a good example of how easy it is to make a game that includes good PC features, then provides an incentive that if you buy the game, you get access to more abilities, more characters, etc. Keep in mind that League of Legends is completely free to play, and you can play with people that have purchased the game.

I agree.... Its almost as if we get hit with a slap and say; "TY!!! May I have another?"

Except its not just at FPSADMIN, it is happening elsewhere too. I blame Activision/IW with that trash MW2 and the scheme it was presented with. Greed seems to be the by-word these days with Publishers engendered by the stampede of loyal IW users who trusted IW and bought MW2 sight unseen.

I think its just business, if they spend much money on the PC version then they would loose money. Sales suck for pc compared to the xbox, it just the way it is now. Also true however, it seemingly reflects the loos of long range plans for success. It is so glaringly evident of a "grab the money and run" scheme. While it may not be, it sure smacks of it and a lack of long range success plans.

Gentlemen,

I love this statement:

However, to give Infinity Ward credit, showing that they are considering placing dedicated servers into the game shows that they obviously listen to the community, or are dedicated to supporting their products and continue to try and make them better, even after their release, which is becoming a rare quality in game companies today.

Give them credit? Listening to the community? This guy must have had blinders on. For over (3) months, Infinity Ward has basically turned their backs on us. I know, maybe their internet connection was down and they couldn't get back to us right away! Come on, if ever there was a time to stand together as a PC community, it would be now. Basically let them know that we're done here, nothing to see...just move along.

Send a message:

The game, Modern Warfare 2, is not balanced for PC players, you can keep your dedicated server files! The game is dead in our eyes!

I know its just a rumor, but it will be interesting to see how this plays out. I'll reserve further comment until its confirmed. Just my humble opinion, be it ever so humble!

Respectfully,

Sgt.Rock

It should be noted, that we can't give any credit to IW, this rumor of them working on a dedicated server patch is just that a big fat RUMOR.

Why would you trust IW? Remember they told me personally at the XBOX live event that there will be dedicated servers files, mod tools and support.... 402 told slashdot or another site, can't remember their name, that the game will be the same as past PC COD games, nothing has changed....

I think I trust my local used car sales man more then I do Infinity Ward.... -NVG3D-

Its a rumor nothing more. If they did release dedi files do you think they would put any effort into patching it? Did you see the last patch fix list for the PC? It was laughable. I think it contained only one fix and that was:

Texture Hack on PC fix

Is that all that needed to be fixed? Shit this game must be perfect!

You can forget about dedicated servers for MW2. You think Activision, especially considering what they just did to the top brass of IW, gives a shit about dedicated servers?

What they want is more $$$, nothing else. It's more apparent than ever who's running the show.
