View Full Version : Wireless Network Card - desktop
Hello all and Happy New Year!
I'm looking NVG_side for a good wireless network card that will perform well while gaming.
I will be using the 802.11 b/g connection
Don't need long distance as my router is close by, but would like the option of security built in. Running XP Pro, but will eventually be running Windows 7 Pro.
I use the Linksys WMP54G card at work but have a feeling there is something better out there.
Feedback welcome!
Thanks!

Call me old school but I would never use wireless anything for gaming. Mice, keyboards and defiantly not network! If your router is close by run a cable, I have no reason to think this way, I'm just old fashioned...
Hehe, trust me I'd love to as that's the way I had it wired and my thought is along the same line as yours. In this case wires are out of the question for the interim. Maybe down the road. I have had to relocate the PC out of the room with the router because we have a baby on the way!:D Hope to hook it all back up the way it was at some point. Just need a bandaid (wireless card) to keep me connected for now.

Well if you have to get wireless go for a card rather than a USB thingie. There you go more unfounded computer hardware discrimination... I don't much like USB either...
Unacceptable

I prefer Linksys to others for ease of configuring via a simple CD.This should work pretty good.

Try that Linksys, you'll have to look around on where to get it thats convienent for you, maybe Best Buy or some online store.
Its almost an auto configure with the CD,very easy.D link & others aren't quite as easy,at least not the ones I've tried for my friends.
Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!:salute:

From what I have seen a wireless setup can work ok if deployed properly. Not sure if you have the router already, and you may already be well versed in wireless setups. If that's the case then disregard the following.
A couple of things to consider:
Make sure to secure your wireless network! This is by far the most important item. Set a really strong security token, go for a 128 bit value. It will be a pain to punch it in the first time, but the longer the token the harder it will be for people to break into your system. I helped out a friend recently who was having his bandwidth used by strangers. He noticed cars stopping across the street from time to time for no good reason. One day he happened to be at the PC at the right time and saw that someone was connecting to his network, not good. He didn't have his network secured at all, doh!
Make sure that the router is not configured to reset the connections too often. I think this can cause hiccups when you are in game.
Try to position your wireless router so that the signal goes through as few walls etc as possible between it and your pc.
Another great method that helps with signal, and reduces bandwidth leechers is to replace the standard omni directional antenna with a high gain directional unit. You basically aim it toward your pc (line if sight). You will get a better connection to the router, and since less of your signal will be bleeding to the outside of the house it will cut down on those pesky leech attempts.
I am no networking guru by any means, and I don't run it myself. These are just things I have learned helping friends etc.
BTW, I agree with the others in saying to go with a good linksys router/card.
