According to TorrentFreak Modern Warfare 2 has been downloaded illegally nearly 4,100,000 times for PC in 2009, topping the list after only releasing just two months ago.
Provided these numbers are indeed accurate, Activision has potentially lost more than $245 million in sales on the PC version alone. Well, what else should one expect when they didnt have dedicated servers for the PC side!
3, Prototype, Need for Speed Shift, and Street Fighter IV help round off the top five for the year, all of which appeared on the PC platform.
New Wii was the highest downloaded Wii title with 1,150,000 downloads.
The report notes the total download figures for this year double that of last year's numbers, and that PC remains to be the target for torrent downloads, with more than three times that of the Wii.
Disclamer: Outpostgamez doesnt condone, of torrents, warez or other pirated methods!

What percentage of those downloads were simply a big "FU AV/IF!"? -NVG3D-

I don't think we need to read too much into this. The most popular, most hyped game of the year is the most downloaded. That's no big deal.

We all knew it would be the most pirated. CoD4 had piracy and IW's answer for MW2 was to give less game that costs $10 more. Boy someone needs to open their eyes lol.

BS...how can they lose $ they were never going to get in the first place? Those pirated number figures do not equate to 1-to-1 sales lost by any stretch of the imagination.
And as HK pointed out, a big boost in the piracy is likely due to (well-deserved) resentment from the PC community.

Whenever these numbers come out someone always puts a $ amount on those figures saying this is how much piracy cost them. A more accurate number of lost sales would probably be 10-15% of that who would have paid for the single player only but didn't cause they could steal it.
Also I wonder how many bought the console version but downloaded the torrent as well.

Yup and how many copies were burned from that torrent.

It should also be noted that it was also the number one download for the xbox360 and it was "leaked" well in advance of it's release.

Piracy is always an FU to the dev. This particular case does put a smile on my face though.
