I am glad I read some of the support ticket type articles for Shattered Horizon. It seems this is one of those games that doesn't support 1280x1024 resolution (I have a square LCD and that's the resolution I need to use. I prefer square displays). It disturbs me that I have bought at least 4 "wide screen" only games that I can recall, that make me have to play it either in a smaller area of the screen (a "letterbox"), or skewed as I strike a compromise with the aspect ratio.
From what I read, this game even requires scaling settings workarounds in Nvidia/ATI control panels to even get it to display in a letterbox, without skewing.
Too bad, because I was excited when I heard of this game. It looks like a lot of fun and seems like it would be good multiplayer. (dedicated servers are certainly a step in the right direction)
However, I'm not buying any more games that don't support 1280x1024. (and the next one I buy by accident can go back)
Part rant, but my main reason for commenting is to warn like minded people that this game is for wide screen displays.

I too dislike wide screen monitors and was unaware of "Widescreen only" games. Wide screen is for movies, and not much cop for reading text. My PC isn't just for gaming or watching movies. It's stick to my pair of 1280x1024 screens thanks...

Wide screen is for movies, and not much cop for reading text.
Especially on the Web. It's unbelievable the number of fixed width sites, where if you have a nice high res wide screen display, you're reading the pages in a strip with a good portion of your screen area wasted.
As for Shattered Horizon, this is what I am reacting to:

Answer: "The company thinks this is not a problem."
Other games I can think of offhand that I bought are Riddick Dark Athena/Butcher Bay, Mirrors Edge and Assassins Creed. By default, these run in a letterbox (like watching a movie on TV in cinemascope). What I do is adjust the aspect ratio so it fills the screen a bit more, with a small amount of skewing.
Another one was F.E.A.R. 2, but they added a "disable wide screen" setting in Advanced with one of the game updates. So that made me happy.

I have seen a trend toward "Realism" meaning Movie/camcorder news reel. Blood splats over my screen and motion blur WTF am I to think I see the world through the lens of a camera? Wide screen falls into this category, watching a movie or playing a game?? just because it looks like the cinema doesn't make it more real, just more like another media format.

Ok, I'll bite. I like wide screen FPS. For an RTS, meh. But for an FPS it's really a must. Stop what you are doing and look straight ahead (away from your monitor, duh). If you are like 99% of people, your main focus is primarily ahead but not very much up or down. You do however pick up on peripheral vision to some extent. My biggest complaint with MOHAA was the limited FOV enforced by many anti-cheat programs. Played with the default FOV I felt like I had blinders on (like they put on horses that pull carriages in the city to keep passing cars from spooking them).
A widescreen monitor should provide a more natural representation of one's field of vision when just walking around. Next time you walk down the street just notice your natural field of vision and things you react to. I'll bet you notice stuff to the left and right a lot more than what is above or below. We live in a widescreen world - or at least I do. :)

The thing I find odd about Shattered Horizon being wide screen only, is this game above most that up and down is equally as important left and right. It's a 3D zero G shooter. The whole point of the game is that you have complete freedom of movement. You can be attacked for any angle.
It has more to do with attempting to follow current trends than realism. Cutting corners and saving development costs.
