View Full Version : Valve Explains Item Finding in TF2

This weekend saw the release of the Sniper/Spy Update for TF2 as previously reported by FPSadmin. There have been a few issues with the update and most notable among them has been the random weapon access granted by the update. Though some of these issues continue, the radical change in how players unlock new weapons has prompted Valve to once again explain their design choices and intentions to the community:

From http://www.teamfortress.com/

Secondly, we wanted to take a moment to talk about the new item drop system in the update, since we're getting a lot of questions about it.

Why did we build a new system?

With our first four class updates we were tying the new weapons for each class to a set of achievements. Our intention was to make a set of achievements that eventually all players would get, and would be fun to get along the way. In some cases we did a good job at this (Scout), and in some cases we did a bad one (Medic). Across all of the class packs we were disappointed in the number of people that got to play with the new weapons, and feedback from the community was generally not favorable with this approach.
What did we do?

For the last number of months we've been working on using the Steam Cloud to store a player's inventory. With that finally in place, we were able to deploy a new system focused on the giving of items to players. That new system watches the amount of time that players are playing TF2, and gives them a chance to find items at regular intervals. They aren't guaranteed to get the item at those points, but they have a pretty good chance. We based the system on granting items on the amount of time played because we don't want players to have to do weird things like join achievement grinding servers to get new content. Basing it off time also has the benefit of ensuring that if you play a lot of TF2, you're going to get more items than players who don't.
How long do I have to play to get an item?

When we were tuning this system we first looked at the average amount of time that players spend playing TF2 daily. From there, we set the goal of most players having around 20 items in their inventory after a couple of weeks of play. If you're someone who plays a lot of TF2, you're going to get items a lot faster than that. In the first few hours after the release yesterday, we had some issues that prevented the system from working properly, so that timeframe was not indicative of the system as it's designed.
Is this the way we'll find items from now on?

Like everything else we build, we'll be iterating on this system for a while, and have a lot of features planned. Some of the next things we have planned are:

- Item trading. This is why you're finding duplicates.

- Giving players a method to influence the system so they can work directly toward getting specific items.

- Adding more rare items like the hats.

We're going to be working on and rolling these out while we're also working on the next class pack, with the goal being to get it all released before then.

I am betting they will patch first thing next week, and at least add back that achievements give the unlocks.

There are a lot of unhappy TF2 players out there including me.

Wasn't sure where to put this, but I was curious this evening how popular the TF2 weekend really is.

I was blown away. It came it at #1

As of 7:30PM Eastern on Saturday. This is a sample of stats on http://store.steampowered.com/stats/ at that time.

look at codwaw way down there.... does this list ONLY include people who play their games with steam?

That is correct this is only the people playing with the Steam version of these games. It does also count singleplayer though since it only tracks the number of accounts playing the game, so that number is not exact for MP. By contrast, every single person playing counterstrike or TF2 with a legitimate copy must be logged into steam.

Still compared to other games on the list, COD:W@W is doing respectably.

At 11 AM Eastern on Sunday here is the list for comparison. (If I read it correctly I believe that peak users on Steam is shown to be around 3 PM Eastern).

75,739 80,309 Counter-Strike: Source (http://store.steampowered.com/app/240/)
60,054 64,645 Counter-Strike (http://store.steampowered.com/app/10/)
58,406 63,771 Team Fortress 2 (http://store.steampowered.com/app/440/)
19,326 20,799 Football Manager 2009 (http://store.steampowered.com/app/10540/)
14,994 17,761 Left 4 Dead (http://store.steampowered.com/app/500/)
12,261 12,890 Empire: Total War (http://store.steampowered.com/app/10500/)
6,949 7,638 Condition Zero (http://store.steampowered.com/app/80/)
5,014 5,848 Day of Defeat: Source (http://store.steampowered.com/app/300/)
4,435 4,646 Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II (http://store.steampowered.com/app/15620/)
3,656 4,918 Garry's Mod (http://store.steampowered.com/app/4000/)
3,362 4,231 Killing Floor (http://store.steampowered.com/app/1250/)
2,034 2,293 Half-Life 2: Deathmatch (http://store.steampowered.com/app/320/)
1,962 2,600 Plants Vs Zombies (http://store.steampowered.com/app/3590/)
1,877 2,097 Half-Life 2 (http://store.steampowered.com/app/220/)
1,646 1,796 Day of Defeat (http://store.steampowered.com/app/30/)
1,098 1,177 The Last Remnant (http://store.steampowered.com/app/23310/)
827 1,144 Call of Duty: World at War (http://store.steampowered.com/app/10090/)

As you can see. Counterstrike has retaken its place, so it was but a fleeting moment that TF2 grabbed that brass ring.

Turns out, these stories might have been more related than I thought. A guy posted in this thread (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=872722)on the TF2 forums a picture that shows just how bad the idling for unlocks has gotten now that players know unlocks come with time spent on servers.

Teach me to be enthusiastic about PC gaming moving on. Clearly I forgot that people are worthless scum bags and the world runs based on the common denominator. Please excuse my naivete.

You really can't blame people for wanting the new weapons. I would have gotten mine in a few hours of actual game play if not for this horrible new system.

I know they are gonna fix it, but I was so excited and looked forward to playing with the new stuff with my friends over this extended weekend. Over 200 headshots in four days and I still don't have the huntsman. :(

Now I am off to kick the idlers out of our servers, something I should not have to be doing.

Yes, at least when people went to grinding servers they left the rest alone to actually play the game.
