HDD SPACE: 1.5GB of free hard drive space
MP HOSTING: To MP matches, a 2Ghz dual-core or better processor is recommended.
INTERNET: Broadband connection and service required for Multiplayer Connectivity

-=DIRECTX=-

Call of Duty: World at War MultiPlayer Beta (hereafter COD:WaW MPB) requires that your computer have the latest version of DirectX 9.0c installed in order to run. This is available online at:

http://www.microsoft.com

In order for the MPB to run, Windows Vista users will need to install the update for DirectX 9.0c. This is necessary even if DirectX 10 is installed.
-=PUNKBUSTER(TM)=-

During the installation of COD:WaW MPB you will be given the option to install Even Balance, Inc.'s PunkBuster anti-cheat system. This is optional, however if it is not installed you will not be able to play on servers that have PunkBuster enabled.

-=UNINSTALLING=-

COD:WaW can be uninstalled from your system from the Add/Remove programs section of the Windows Control Panel (Start -> Settings -> Control Panel). Select COD:WaW MPB from the list of applications installed and select Change/Remove, then follow the instructions on screen.

----------------
III. HOSTING A SERVER
----------------

NOTE: Activision does not provide support for running or maintaining a server beyond the initial stages of launching the server. Activision only provides support for the Windows server delivered with the MPB.

NOTE: The maximum number of supported players is 32

You will first need to determine the server type which best suits your needs, Listen or Dedicated.

A Listen server is ideal for small to mid-sized or small internet games where all participants are able to directly connect to the server via a known IP address. Listen servers are not intended to run indefinitely. Also, Listen servers allow the host to play the game on the machine acting as the server.

A dedicated server is ideal for large internet games. Dedicated servers are able to run for long periods of time with little maintenance if properly configured. Also, dedicated server capable of appearing in the master server list for internet games. It is not possible to play on a machine hosting a dedicated server.
· Launching a listen server.
1) Launch Call of Duty: World at War Multiplayer Beta.
2) Click Start New server.
3) Select the Gametype and map.
4) Set your server name and any other options.
5) Ensure "Dedicated" is set to NO.
6) Click Start.
· Launching a dedicated server.
1) Launch Call of Duty: World at War Multiplayer Beta.
2) Click Start New Server.
3) Select the Gametype and map.
4) Set your server name and any other options.
5) Ensure "Dedicated" is set to Internet.
6) Click Start.
7) The MPB will now close and the server will run in a console window.

NOTE: Your dedicated server may not appear instantly in the Internet Server Browser. Please be patient.

-------------------
IV. TROUBLESHOOTING
-------------------

-=VIDEO ISSUES=-

Most video issues can be resolved by installing the latest drivers for your video card from the manufacturer's website.

ATI: http://www.ati.com
NVIDIA: http://www.nvidia.com

-=SOUND ISSUES=-

Most sound issues can be resolved by ensuring you have the latest AC97 drivers for your sound card installed. Check the website of your sound card manufacturer for the latest AC97 driver release if you are encountering problems with audio playback.

-=INTERNET & CONNECTIVITY ISSUES=-

COD:WaW MPB requires an active Internet connection for online play. If you are having problems connecting to a server, make sure your Internet connection is active (try websites, other online games, etc).

If you are having problems hosting a server, please ensure that your firewall and/or router are properly configured. Activision does not provide support for routers and firewalls.

---------------
V. KNOWN ISSUES
---------------

DIRECTX CRASH AT LAUNCH
If you encounter the following error: "This application has failed to start because d3dx9_34.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem." Try installing the latest version of DirectX 9.0c (found on www.microsoft.com)
CRASH WITH REALTEK ONBOARD SOUND CARDS
Users with Realtek(TM) onboard sound cards and Windows(R) Vista will need to use Microsoft Audio Drivers 6.0, which can be found at www.microsoft.com
CRASH WITH SIGMATEL ONBOARD SOUND CARDS
There are issues with running the MPB and using Sigmatel(R) onboard sound cards. If you are experiencing this issue, and you are running the MPB from the primary partition, then you will need to install all Windows(R) Vista updates, and the latest Sigmatel drivers from www.dell.com.
If you are running the MPB from a secondary partition, then follow the above instructions, in addition to downloading the latest BIOS from your motherboard manufacturer.
PUNKBUSTER AND INSTALLATION
When installing COD:WaW MPB, the user has the option to install Punkbuster(TM). If the user chooses not to install Punkbuster(TM) during the MPB installation, but wishes to install it after the MPB is installed, then they will need to uninstall the MPB, and reinstall it, choosing to then install Punkbuster(TM).
Another option is to install the standalone installer for Punkbuster(TM). For Windows(R) XP, Windows(R) XP 64, and Windows(R) Vista Ultimate users, install the PBSETUP utility which can be found at http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=pbsetup.php.
For Windows(R) Vista Ultimate 64, Windows(R) Vista Home Premium, and Windows(R) Vista Business users, install the PBSETUP and PBSVC utility which can be found at www.evenbalance.com
ISSUES WITH NETGEAR WGR614v5 ROUTERS
Due to an issue with this hardware revision of the router, players will be unable to host a game using the Netgear WGR614v5 router. Players will, however, still be able to join a game, as long as the proper ports have been forwarded
WINDOWS(R) VISTA USER ACCOUNT CONTROL
For Windows(R) Vista Ultimate 64, Windows(R) Vista Home Premium, and Windows(R) Vista Business users , if “User Account Control” is set to on, Punkbuster(TM) will not function correctly when hosting a server. Please run the program as Administrator when attempting to host a PunkBuster server to ensure full functionality.
Using a Windows(R) Vista profile with no admin rights when “User Account Control” is on will prohibit you from changing the key code via the Options menu. Please run the program as Administrator when attempting change the Key Code to ensure that the change is properly updated.
PUNKBUSTER
If you do not choose to install Punkbuster when installing the MPB, but want to later, you will need to uninstall the MPB and reinstall it. Alternatively, install the PBSETUP utility which can be found at http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=pbsetup.php.

What about 64bit?
Will it work for the client?
Will we be able to host dedicated servers on a 64bit system?

The installer circulating at the moment says it can't install on my 64bit system.

edit: "Vista Ultimate 64" would be 64bit i guess :/ Strange the current installer is not working then. Maybe the fileplanet version is the only working one.

How would you set a beta server up on a dedicated box? I would upload the beta to dedicated box, but would I need a key for the server? Or just follow the instructions in the ReadMe.... no key needed?

you need a windows server (for the beta) and NO cd key.

lol... did anyone read their dedicated server setup instructions in the readme? LOL!

Yeah, that is how we run dedicated servers! We launch the game and in the menu we click on the "Start New Server" button. wow... that is so horribly wrong. I feel sorry for anyone new to the CoD series attempting to run a dedicated server that way with that being the only guidance.

Maybe at a LAN somewhere where there is a real gaming PC acting as the host. For everyone else, well, I guess they will find their way here, or give up trying. ;)

I cannot thank you guys enough for providing info on running a game server in the COD series. I've used your site almost every time I've had an issue that I didn't understand (and there are a lot of them).

I took over the admin of a dedicated server even though I barely understood what needed to be accomplished to run one and have worked my way through a lot of the learning needed to understand and run one. I still don't understand a lot of the the nuts and bolts but this site has always been a great help.

BTW, does anyone have a list of what each setting in a config file does? That's where I have a lot of problems in not knowing what some settings do or change.

Thanks FPS.

Any time SoDak that is what we are here for.

As for the commands, 99% of them are carried over from CoDx... I'm getting ready to jump on a plane and will be away for the next 3-ish weeks, so I may not have time to put something together.

If I do I will post a link in here. Anyone else find the time, please let em know so we can sticky the thread and get it ready for the full game.

I'm trying to run WAW on a dedicated server that is running multiple games of MOH-SP and COD4 but I am missing something. I've uploaded the WAW files from my personal computer where it was installed and I've configured the server.cfg per the excellent example in this thread but the server won't run and I do not know why.

In an earlier post someone mentioned that the mp server file was included in the beta download but I don't see any file except the CODWaWbeta.exe file.

What am I doing wrong?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

What is the server doing when you do that?

Does anybody know the Server command for enabling UAV/Recon Plane map ONLY when the UAV/Recon Plane are active? Otherwise, there is no map showing and you have to hit the button to see the map. What I am trying to enable on our server is auto-popup of the map when the UAV/Recon Plane are active, without having to hit the map button.

Your help is appreciated!

I don't think you can, because the server would probably be 'impure' and not a ranked server.

These options tend to be only allowed when running a modified unranked game from a mod folder.

So it would simply be hardcore on or off :-

set scr_hardcore "0" - or 1

I am not convinced that hardcore works as it does for COD4, or working properly at all.

In the standard game you get all HUD icons, the map, and red dots on the map when a weapon is used (unsuppressed).

In hardcore there should be no icons, no map, and your health is reduced to 30%, but you should get the map automatically when a UAV/Recon plane is used, assuming it should work the same as COD4. In WaW hardcore (so far), I can only see the UAV/Map if I press X ........... and that is impracticable. I am also not convinced that the health is being reduced on all hardcore servers. With our server on hardcore it seems to take many shots to get a kill (like the standard game), yet I have been in other servers where it is obvious that your health is reduced, with a lot less shots to get a kill.

SoDak you have g_speed in there twice with a different value. That might be messing it up. Once under "Server Personality Mode" and once under "Player Settings"

Also. A lot of the commands I see in there I can not find in the call of duty world at war console. Don't know are you sure they all work? Specially the vehicle ones can't find any of those?

Capelle,

Thank you for noticing that. We have the server up and running but have been seeing issues. You would think they would have had them figured out because they used the COD4 engine but I have all kinds of trouble with the in game browser and joining a server.

Kind of makes it hard to tweak the server when you cannot tweak it, join it to see what it changed, and then tweak it again when you cannot get into the game in the first place let alone rejoin!
