Wow! Like some B Movie script played out by unwitting actors in a cheap remake of 28 Days Later the forums and its members at CODHQ were in a frezy during "The Night of The Beta" Arggh ! If this was the hype the developers are looking for then they are either sadists or masochists. There were threats of banishment and or post deletion by the community manager along with some poorly time Intel about the wonderfull experience the "Freinds And Family" players were having.Talk about throwing fuel on the fire.
The overwhelming cry for information that members desired could have been mitigated by a simple progress update.Thats no time to describe the wonderfull experience that a select group of freinds and family are having playing the game. The cherry on the sundae was the threat of banishment or post deletion if certain posts were made which would further overwhelm the server. A server crash probably would have been the kindest form of self imolation for the codhq community on this night.
As the famed tokens were handed out and the xbox360 players figured out how to use them, the boards settled down.In the PC forum only PC gamers were left. And then the news that everyone should have anticipated and should have been informed of earlier, sunk in.There would be no pc beta release .But hold on one minute. The explanation was coming. The reason the beta was late was due to the fact that something extra special was being done for PC gamers and we had no reason to be dissapointed. Hmm.I have got to remember that line the next time I forget to give my son a birthday present.I have no doubt Treyarch is working hard for PC gamers this time around and that it will be appreciated in the community but a professional in the office doesnt miss a self imposed deadline and then explain it away like that. Professionals communicate in the work arena in a timley and proactive way.Not a reactive way.
In the end as I think about these things I have to consider one thing that makes me feel a bit better about the entire community and the developers as a whole. They are in the rodeo with the rest of us and do have a relationship with their customer base that is unique to many corporate and entertainment entities .Maybe too professional equates to less entanglement at the community level. And we sure wouldnt want that.
