View Full Version : Going the Dedicated Server Route
Those of you that lease/own a dedicated box, how has your experience been? I think I'm pretty well familiar with the advantages. From your experience what are the disadvantages of running your server(s) off a single dedicated machine?
Also, who do you use currently and/or in the past and why?
Much obliged for any comments you can share.
If I've missed a recent discussion thread on this I apologize--please redirect.
We have rented a dedicated box probobly for the last 5 years or so.
Our first few box's were ones we had to do everything install all the games ettt.
A year ago or so we moved to Hypernia's dedicated box's because they also allow ranked servers so were not paying for a ranked server and a box, we were able to do both at one price.
Hypernia has been wonderful for us, they even install the games for you and are quick to respond to any technical issues.

Drawback: cost, no ranked BF2/2142 and no "honor" in America's Army. That's about it.
Benefits: run whatever you want.
Get your own box if you can afford it. There's some free control panels you can run as well. Serverdoc is good (www.serverdoc.com). If you prefer Linux you can write your own scripts and use Webmin (www.webmin.com) to execute them via the web.
A few more panels that i've never tried, but are free:

Currently renting servers from SoftLayer, www.softlayer.com
I've also used ThePlanet (but not currently), www.theplanet.com
Both are solid networks based in Texas that will give you excellent pings nationwide.
