Hi all, CMSTEEL here of Team -BeerMe-. We've had a COD4 server running privately for a year or so, and recently switched to Windows Server 2008 running from my office off a T1 line.My company server, delves out internal IP addresses to each machine. So in short the network looks like so;Internet -> Modem -> WS2k8 box -> Linksys Router WRV200 w. Wireless -> Gameing Machine x2 / Wireless Laptop / Printers.I can see the server, I can connect to the server, the internet can't see the server, I've had team mates try typeing in the IP/DynDns address but not luck, but it's streaming to PBBans and PBBans can see it. So I'm guessing that there's something funky with WS2k8, that I don't know of, all ports are forwarded correctly through firewalls, I've used your .cfg files from this site (thanks a ton their awesome), as well I've got my short cut target correct and the whole shibang. We used to host off of XP Pro and never had a problem, but I figured since WS2k8 can house 32gigs of RAM and help with processing power this might be an option. Any ideas whats going on?Server info; beerme.game-host.org

Windows Server 2008 has its own firewall. You may have to create a 28960 rule inbound. See Start/Programs/Administrative Tools/Windows Firewall with Advanced Security. DON'T use the one in Control Panel...it doesn't show the rules list in enough detail.

So evidently even with the advanced admin firewall settings I'm getting the same issue. The console is talking to the cod4master.activision.com, PBBans is streaming but still no outside gameplay allowed at the present.

I'm wondering if WS2k8 has a security setting that disallows incoming information, though I'm running most of the server side commands through Remote Desktop via a satellite location. So it's obviously letting me in that way.

Are there any other ports/routs I can take to get this going? I have to believe that WS2k8 is built to allow these types of connections.

Well, yeah, it's inbound that you have to worry about. Outbound is pretty much wide open. Try this:


Make sure that the firewall is actually started in Services. The gotcha with this firewall is you cannot disable it just by stopping the service.
Go back to Start/Programs/Administrative Tools/Windows Firewall with Advanced Security, and open it.
Right-click on the top level in the MMC, and choose Properties
You'll see Domain, Private, and Public Profile tabs (plus IPSec, which you're not concerned about here).
On each of the Profile tabs, you can either turn OFF the firewall, or Allow all inbound.
Set that on each tab, and try it again.

This will tell you whether, or not, it's Windows 2008.

Thanks Old Dog, I did all that previously after you informed me the first time. It seemed to work. The problem was with DynDns, I got all that straightened out, and viola! It's all working great now.

If any of you guys ever play CoD4 please stop by and see how the server is doing.

I have successfully completed all of the setup functions (as far as I know) and the server starts up just fine. The problem is that when I load a map (map mp_shipment) the application bombs out with "Illegal instruction". I am using the mod modwarfare to test. Any ideas?

Hello, i am in the process of buying a dedicated data center box and am wondering if i need Windows Server 2003 for my Call of Duty Servers and other game servers/also voice servers such as teamspeak and vetrilo to work??

You do not "need" Windows 2003 ... you can install the game server and Ventrilo and Teamspeak on Linux, if you wish.

hei there, is there any mod or admin here now?

i wanna ask something with my cod4 v1.7 linux server..

i've succesfully install and run my server from putty..

then i run the client -> i found my server -> but i can't connect to server.. it says "key in used, try connecting later".

try it to other servers, it has no problem.. so what should i fix that?

Hi, Im having alot of trouble playing Call of duty 4: Modern warfare for the PC. I have Windows vista, and every time I try and join a game, there are no servers to be found. Just a FYI:

You can do the windows firewall rule thru the command prompt the easy way

Type this in the command console

netsh firewall add allowedprogram "D:\cod4-server\iw3mp.exe" 192.168.1.1_28960 ENABLE

The following is what you change

"D:\cod4-server\iw3mp.exe" 192.168.1.1_28960

The location of the server exe and the ip/port

The ip/port is what the rule set is named. It does not assign the ip/port for the server exe, its just the name. The name will show under the firewall configuration, ie, windows firewall.

You can make the name what you want, it doesnt have to be ip/port. You can name it cod4_server or what ever you want. If you use a space you must use a underscore _

Hope someone can help me out here.
I did try too follow this guide too set up a server.
The problem is that i cant join it:(
The server seems too run, it say that is sending heartbeat too codemaster...

I have a desktopcomputer that i have cod4 on and one serverpc with win7.
i did copy the cod4 file from desktoppc to my server and after that i did follow the guide.

I have a d_link router and i did portforward port 28960, 20800 and 20810 tom my server ip.

Did also open the firewall in the router for port 28960, 20800 and 20810. Did try with upd and both without any luck:(

Did also unbound rules in my win7 firewall for port 28960, 20800 and 20810, i think i did it for upd.
and i have open access for iw3mp.exe.

BUT, i still can join my server.
I realy hope someone can plz help me out here

The port forwarding must be the problem. Try placing the server IP address as DMZ - you should be able to find this option in the Dlink Router. still forward 28960 however from Wan to LAN

No you dont but if external client are going to connect and you run custom mods/maps then you may need HTTP web server installed for redirect - or use another HTTP redirect source.

The port forwarding must be the problem. Try placing the server IP address as DMZ - you should be able to find this option in the Dlink Router. still forward 28960 however from Wan to LAN

Did get the server too run:)
When i removed the set+ net_ip from the commando line, then it started up.
