View Full Version : Battle for the Pacific : mini review coming soon

Just picked up a copy at the local EB Games and will be installing and getting a mini review up later today.

http://www.fpsadmin.com/gallery/main.php/d/3858-1/bftp+2007-12-08+12-15-12-17.jpg Talk about saving some $$ in packaging..... Plane white DVD sleeve and a very small, what you would call a DVD insert, that's it in the box. Almost to the point I thought I picked up the "coming soon" box. However the game is on DVD, will let you know if they fill the DVD or DVD is now the standard media for games. - Interesting note, the back of the box has the Havok logo, so this may be interesting.
- Readme is in the reply to the thread, here (http://www.fpsadmin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13961)
- Some screen shots while you wait: click here (http://www.fpsadmin.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=3783)
You may not want to wait, as the MP side of this game is a direct port from the console side of the business. So far I have not been able to find any type of dedicated server and you can only use the on screen keyboard to enter your MP and host name???

As of this writing, there where no servers (listening) on line and I kept getting disk error messages when I tried to start a game. Almost like it was looking for a console disk and not a PC disk.

Update: Mini review is now posted in this thread. click reply to view

- BFTP.exe needs your firewall open (even for SP?!?!?!)
- Res supported all the way up to 1920x1200x60 (which is what I played at)
- A console port all the way (you can only enter your MP name and or server name via an on screen keyboard, you can't type it in)

You can view a bunch of (first level) screen shots here (http://www.fpsadmin.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=3783) as well as a short video I put up here (http://www.fpsadmin.com/download/uploads/BFTP.wmv) (WMV format: ~26Meg)

I wanted to give a more MP overview then SP but 1) there where no servers up or listed 2) I tried to start my own but could not run around or check out the maps because it needs at least 2 players so here are some words regarding the SP side of the game.

Graphics cranked up all the way ran smooth, however I run a XQ6850, 8800GTX Ultra Super clock and 2 gigs of ram so frame rate for me is fine. I did notice some depth of field blur which was nice. The explosions, as shown in the video above, look very good, however the AI is just plain stupid and will sit there with their rifles pointed in the direction of what seems to be even dumber enemies.

There is no blood, and the sounds are very limited however the graphics are not that bad, not Airborne or Call of Duty 4 good but closer to CoD2.

I wish there where more MP options and you could do more with the file system (have not tried that hard to get in them) as this game has some potential. However the game is, marketed as a "Value" title and it shows.

I've also noticed that the game was released on the 360, PS3 and Wii.
