What is the difference in a ranked server and unranked?

Hi guys i have heard this quite a bit but i dont have a clue what it means?

cod4 introduced a ranking feature, which allows the player to upgrade his/her gear in multiplayer with leveling. a player starts at level 1 and cand level up to 60 while gaining a new gun or perk on almost each level. the rank data is stored in a file on the players pc and is bound to the cdkey the game is installed/used with
only ranked servers support this feature, on unranked you will gain no xp
