I am looking for some help disableing punkbuster. My clan and I have always had issues running it and the server is a private server. We have tried a few punkbuster commands that worked in cod2 but the product still remains enabled. If anyone kows what needs to be done please post.

In the command line,

+set sv_punkbuster 0

That should turn it off...

Is it

+set sv_punkbuster 0

or

set sv_punkbuster "0"

I have tried that command in my config file but it seems that its still enabled.

It's probabaly in your cfg as well. So you're disabling it in the command line but then enabling it in the cfg. Just a guess....

In the command line: +set sv_punkbuster 0 (or remove it from command line altogether)

In the server.cfg: set sv_punkbuster "0"

or both

It needs to be done in the Command Line that starts up your server. Simply having it in your config file does nothing. So, if you are renting a server from a server company, they may need to change your command line, if you don't have access to it.

I had to put a help ticket in because i was never able to access the startup icon. Everything is working as expected now. thanks.

You're quite welcome. Just wondering though, why in the world would you run your server without Punkbuster running?

We (the clan), have always had problems with punk buster. We have a few people that are in the same house and they tend to have high pings and Punk buster seems to randomly kick these folks. We also have people running windows vista and they too seem to have some odd issues with it. Our server has about 10-15 admin's so we just kinda of police the server that way. It my not be a 100%, but the headaches of punk buster are gone.

With Vista, you have to have it "Run as Administrator" (a properties setting) also run pbscv.exe to test and be sure PB is uptodate. A few months ago they now require 2 services be able to run PnkBstrA.exe and PnkBstrB.exe (The B service starts and runs once the game is running)

Let me put a spin on that:
- running without PB is begging for cheaters to join your server.
- running PB in it's basic form is only a close second in that it really does not do much of anything. It only kicks for a lack of communications or tampering with it's service.

Running PB with the available advanced countermeasures unlocks the true power of PB. with the use of the md5toolset, MBL , and streaming with the premier anticheat groups PBBans and PsB. IMO is the best way to fight back against cheaters. I do all of this on all my servers and venture to say I have among the cleanest servers around. The countermeasures are not perfect and a good trained eye in spectation sometimes helps and rarely I will bust someone via a PBss, but I am then able to get them on the gloabl ban list because of streaming.

Im summary, either don't run PB for best performance but accept cheaters will be in the mix or utilize some or all of the advanced countermeasures PB has to offer, accept a little lag but have a fair playing field (or as much of one as possible) BBT

Honestly we have just learned to accept our choice. We have tried to run PB in the past only to find a decline in our membership (people filter out PB servers due to the problems mentioned earlier). We have had debates with in the clan and even called votes. Every time it goes to a 50/50 split and most of the time it has to deal with that lag, and connection issues.

On top of that there are people in this world who feel the need to write hacks that claim to be PB proof. Theres no point in running a problematic anti-cheat software if people can still cheat. Yes, we cant always be on the server but there are about 3-4 admins on the server during peak hours and that does help keep the server clean.
