View Full Version : CoD4 MW Impressions
As the topic title says whats your thoughts on this demo.
Ok here is mine and its going to be short.
If the MP side is like the SP that we are playing this frigging game is going to blow all others away. I have got to say this game frigging rocks.
OMG the detail, the graphics and damn the game play was intesnse from the start to the the point I saved and exited. Damn IW, you got yourself a winner so far here. Damn fine SP game you made.
Now please let MP side be like this. Please and I can 100 percent say this, your CoD4:MW will take off like a frigging rocket. Holy cow IW, sweet job indeed.
Now just imagine a WW2 mod on this platform/game engine and well this whole ball of wax. DAMN DAMN DAMN how it would rock if done correctly.
2 thumbs up so far IW, now please do MP like this.
And oh IW please and I do mean please let us have support for greater than 32 players.

thanks for the reviews guys and gals.
I have not had a chance to play yet (had a home owners board meeting to attend) hopefully I will get some quality time in tomorrow am and report back.
How is performance going? Does it scale well?

This is how to make a first person shooter. The demo kicks major ass. I get a tingly feeling thinking about the multiplayer possibilities.

Game of the year!
Very well done. My disappointment about MOH:A is all forgotten now that I have this game to look forward to in a few weeks time.
All maxed out, Quad core q6600 with 8800gts. Very smooth gameplay.
Wow, wow and wooooow!

I am totally hyped for this game now!
If the multiplayer lives up to the hype then Crysis can wait till January!
I may even have to stop referring to " 402 " as " 404Information not found error " ...:hand:

It runs pretty sweet on my ageing athlon 64 3400, 2gb ram, 7950 agp.. Very nice indeed..
ALL WE NEED NOW IS MP DEMO.. (YEAH RIGHT!!)

I Played the CoD4 Demo last night and to be honest even though it pains me to say it (because IW also have a record for poor support.)
It was superb when you combine that with IW's new found community concept where they are actually encouraging the Cod Community to be a part of the improvement process as well as encouraging the modders and mappers you begin to see where and why Airborne failed.
Talk is cheap but I'm afraid all of EA's & Blackhats talk cost me and many others money when it came to Airborne.
It becomes so obvious when you stack up the two games that Airborne was very poorly finished it really did need another 3/4 months and then we would have seen a real contender and a game that would have held it's own against the CoD4, ETQW and Crysis onslaught.
Who ever made the call to go with the release date was in my opinion not interested in delivering a quality product but rather in getting a quick buck.
These type of people when they become involved in a major high profile product like MOHA are dangerous and in this instance disasterous as well.
I think the game runs smoth because full graphics options are not available in the demo but it will be on the final version.
Anyway the game have a great refined engine and the animations are amazing! I canīt wait to put my hands on the multiplayer!

There is no doubt that the SP Demo is impressive. But let's remember that IW is famous for the quality of their SP games... yes, even CoD2 SP was very impressive.
Yes, the graphics are superior to anything I've seen to date. The FPS are excellent (at least for me). The SP Demo in plain english, kicks ass.
Now then, back to reality. The Online PC Community is concerned with;
Dedicated Server Options and Features.
Ability to configure Servers for Competition Play.
Optimized Punkbuster not consuming excessive CPU Cycles.
Ability to turn on/off console-centric nonsense.
A true, fully fleshed Editor.
Reasonable resource limitations if any.
As good gameplay and graphics as the single player.
Quality, decent sized maps and gametypes. There are more concerns, but for now... these are apparently the major concerns.
If IW/Activision provide the Multi-player version with lag free, similar gameplay, graphics and FPS there will not be enough room in their offices to display all the awards they'll receive. Of course, they'll break every sales record thus far established. Additionally, they'll need help counting the profits. :)
Time will tell. ;)

OK, after playing it one time (yes, I was killed more then I care to share with you guys/gals)
Some things I noticed
The good
1) you can esc the intros and start playing quickly
2) OMG, look at all the video options
3) so far my contoles and mouse settings stick the first time
4) game played smooth as buttar
5) graphics look unbelievalble based on a heavily modified Q based engine in DX9 (IW calls this the COD Tech engine - simply amazing)
6) Can open the iwd files with any compression utility just like CoD1/uo/2
The bad or not so good
1) For the love of god why the grenade key but you can bind this to a mouse button
2) too damn short
3) would love to have seen a MP demo
On the MP demo, I wonder if IW looked at Airborne and said, Hell we could have released a comic book with missing pages of the game and still wiped the floor with Airborne, why waste our time with an MP demo.
Still pisses me off that there was no MP demo, but hey I'll be in AZ for the CoD4 release so you all can count on no delay ..... grrrrrrrrrrr

Its over next to the fence behind the school bus. Follow the yellow compass indicator. It will lead you there.
The demo really kicks ass Rude. I have a Nvidia 7650 in a dual core vista box, and had the resolution cranked up to 1920 x 1200. It played flawlessly. Really sharp graphics, and the blood splurt you get with a headshot using a draganov sniper rifle is REALLY cool.
I agree with what everyone has said. Played at 1680X1050 with everything maxed on a AMDx2 4200 with 2 gig ram and 8800gtx.
Also my only complaint is that all these new games take to many buttons. I just get my fingers in a knot trying to hit all those buttons. Minor complaint I know but I still love Spearhead Freeze tag and all the future holds for me is games with more complex control and no freeze tag.
Well at least CoD4 looks great and plays well in the demo.

I'm out of breath, too old for all that running(65). I'm sure the multiplay will
be a little slower but after the glitchers and cheaters make their appearance,
I like to fall back to the single play mode.
I don't like not being able to clear an area before moving up but these guys
just keep coming until you do, like with Airborne.
My box has a P4-3.8, Nvidia 7800gtx and 2gigs of mem, most settiing are
on and set at high with the res at 12xx by 10xx. The grafs are just great
and the game runs very smooth.
If the multiplay works out for us, this game will be a killer.:D

Now i know why Grant is smiling all the time.
This is it i cannot expres myself about this. this is pure combat Cod gamplay in a modern setting IW was not lieing it plays like Cod2 just with modern weapons and some extra features .
I went over to a friends house and he has a PC that runs on the minimum specs P4 2.4 1gig ram 9800Pro We set everything on low with a res at 800x600 on a 17 inch crt monitor he had about 35 frames a seccond and stil it looked nice.(for that rig of course but stil he can play)
All things asside the Demo plays really nice and smooth the interface has good options for your graphics settings ALL settings actualy.(you can really choose your options in the interface)
People want to hear bad about it good its to damn short. but replayable on a harder level everytime THB i played the MP beta on my xbox and knowing that Cod4 supports 32 players for the PC i think this is the real deal. time wil tell but as for know i am really impressed.

Just played the demo and WOW blow me away.
GFX just breath taking damn cristal clear.
Played the demo 1600X1200 everything on max
standing still inside hit 300 FPS moving around about 120+
Combat fairly stady 90 FPS.It dropes to 70-80 when it gets intense but only for a second.
It was smooth all the time no chopynes at all.
My Spec:
E6700 Duo Core
2 X BFG 8800 Gforce water cooled
EVGA 680I mobo
2 gig Demonator mem with Cooling Fan
All Watercooled and a bit OC
All my members that played it where just as happy with it as I was.
Sure looks like we got a winner this year.Don't think any other game can tought this.
Lets hope MP will be just as good.
I am sure we will find a few bugs but hey we always do :)
PS: it was a lot better then the 6 FPS I got with the same system in the MOHA demo.

All I have to say is WOW!!! Wow, wow, wow!
I have been playing this demo for 3 days now and I am still impressed at everything about it. My one gripe is the same as everyone elses, too short. But hey, it was free so I can't complain too much.
The thing that really impressed me the most about this demo was that after I installed it, I fired it up and it ran smooth as glass with awesome graphics. No fiddling required. It took me days of reading forums and fiddling with the Airborne demo just to get it playable, and it never ran smooth.
If this demo is any indication of how the MP side will play, I think I am in gaming heaven. :D
I just hope they put in toggles to turn off some of the noob/console things like grenade indicators and the like.

Take this all with a grain of salt.
We where shown the MP in action and it looked and played great, however we where not able to play ourselves.
As long as they fixed the bugs from cod1/2 then we should be all set, I don't think they would have changed much from cod2 MP, where Airborne was built on a completely new engine that EA knew nothing about and it literally showed.
It's going to be hard to wait, but I really think we need to wait for the release and what sites say about the game before purchasing. It's dev's like EA and the old IW/ACT who have forced us to be this way now-a-days.

...and so I played it over a few times and once I got past the shock and awe - the glitz and the glitter I realized that in fact the enemy AI is dumb as a sack of hammers... I'm hoping it's better in the full game, but hey ; you asked...:salute:

It would seem that our little revolution paid off some big dividends for everyone...
Who say's that complaining has no effect on developers when we can all see the benefits that have clearly been added to the new CoD4.
We may not have made a lot of friends at IW at the time and we will never be credited with making the difference despite the thousands that took part in the end but as my grandfather used to say "The truth will out in the end" and I am very pleased to see IW at last begin to live up to it's potential as a developer who wants it's customers involved in it's products, long may it be so.

Some clarification:
Even though there are IWD files that operate exactly like CoD2's IWD files operated, most of the files are hidden behind something new in CoD4 called Fast Files. You can find these Fast Files (.ff) in the zones directory in the game's root folder. MOST of the game's data and assets are hidden inside these files, which are supposed to be an improvement over the IWD format.
It is UNCERTAIN at this time whether the game will be made moddable by IW out-of-the-box. The theory is that there will be no method for unpacking the Fast Files, but that the stock scripting files may be released with the mod tools. Historically this means we may have to wait 4-6 months after game release to start seeing scripting mods (AWE, Extreme, PAM, PowerServer types of mods).
As usual, 402 is providing his normal level of communication on this matter, in other words, no comment.
The modding community is already using the demo to find ways around this issue, like dumping memory and searching for the stock sctipting files within memory.

I loved the demo but I am absolutely blown away by the quality of this game. Most FPS games lost alot on the MP side, but IW did COD4 right on the MP side. Personally, I feel it is as intense....maybe more so than the SP side of the game. Now let's hope and pray IW comes out with a type of SDK or map editor so the game has a long life to it.
I am also VERY pleased at how smoothly the game runs. I have a mid-grade video card (ATI X1600 256MB) and I get between 50-125FPS (I have my FPS capped at 125). Even when I am down near 50FPS, my game runs as smooth as silk. So whatever IW did to their game engine, it seems like it's been nicely optimized for DX9.

So MP good, bad or what????? Not the demo, the actual game.
Is this a good game or another let down? When I say good, I 'm talking about the MP side of the game. Single player is nice, nice but MP is what keeps us entertained for months on end.
I see a patch is loomin so support seems to be in line a little better than COD2.
Let me know, thanks!

From my point of view (server admin and something EA still has not figured out) the game is unbelievable. Almost a home run out of the box. There are some small things I wish we had now but I can give that some time - like, server messages, MOTD, mod tools, all things that would push this game over the edge. However IW seems to be on track as they have already stated that they will release small frequent patches and have already released a small client sided only patch to fix some achievement issues.
As for game play, I wish it was still WWII and I will keep saying that until we get a mod or someone else can fill IWs shoes. At first it was a little frustrating for me as I spent most of my early time helping get files to GSPs and other admins. So now I'm actually getting to play a bit and like it a lot. I did not think I would have liked the create a class and perks. They work very well and while some maps should have been left on the editing floor (small ones) others are very good and play nicely.
Most CoD4 games I've played have been TDM as I have had limited time. With that said, there is no strategy and everyone is out to be their own hero. I have a feeling this could steal some player from the very popular CS crowd and when more admins learn how to tweak their server settings it can only get better.
Right now it's all about run and gun just like cod2, can't wait for what the modders bring to the table (crosses fingers in regards to a WWII TC)
It should be noted that my filler for Medal of Honor 1, SH BT and CoD 1 has been BF2 because I like open maps. CoD is getting a lot of play time, if you can call my limited time online while doing a home project with the wife.

Yeah, worm, the theory is true, at least so far. I typically have used a much-hacked SQuery on my web site, and part of it is displaying a map graphic. I have done the same with Serverstats (now Stativore). In prior versions, a .DDS of the map startup graphic is usually available, and all that's necessary is a DDS to JPG (or PNG) conversion. With the .ff files, I can't even find the startup graphic. Luckily, I found map graphics already converted, and am using those, but I sure would like to get into those .ffs.
As to the game, and server: I think IW and ActiVision did quite well with this one. As RD said, there are some gaps, but they're not "oh, my god, the sky is falling" gaps. My server is up and stable. I have some compatibilty issue with my web site, but that's not the game's problem. PB (both PsB and PBBans) went in smoothly, and are streaming nicely, most of the existing rcon tools work, albeit with some glitches due to the change in engine. I'm speaking primarily about HLSW, although Rcon4CoD works, too, sort of.
As for game play, I'm with RD...WWII is, and always has been, my preference. I can, and have, played this game, and it's good. But, I, too, would like to see a WWII mod.
