View Full Version : Increase Player Count

Found this, other threads won't let me post for some reason:
One of the PMOH forum members has discovered how to increase the player count on the dedicated server in Medal of Honor: Airborne.
"I already figured out how to get more players! Looks like the dedicated server app only allows you to do 12 players, but if you change it in the . ini file, it works. I tried 24 and it shows up on the server list! I wonder how many you can get up to. All you need to do is change the Maxplayercap and the maxplayers in the deedicated server .ini file."

If this player cap crap and what not really doesnt work then I am afraid that the player max/caps is HARD-CODED into the game engine.
Sorry folks but what I do see is that we are stuck with 12 slots.

How to make a 24 player server at home....Knowing there's not enough bandwidth.
I ran into an issue at home running a server. An actual server box shouldn't have this issue since you are uploading the server.ini file you made.
I started the dedicated server from the icon in program files. Made my selections and put the server at 24 player in the settings. I saved the file per the instructions as if I was going to upload it somewhere.
I opened the file in "ultraedit" and made a couple additional changes.
The 2 spots I changed were:
MaxPlayers=24
MaxPlayersCap=24
Now for the interesting part...
I restarted the server with the icon again.
Although my setting of maxplayers was still there, the MaxPlayerCap was changed to 12 automagically...
I noticed this by joining the server I made. It showed up as a 12 player.
Actually a bunch of stuff gets written to the file but it seems to be "log in" stuff.
So anyway, here's what I did, (Yes I realise there is no point to a server from my house running 24 players).
I just made the MOHADedicatedServer.ini file READ ONLY. (right click the file/select properties)
The server shows up as 24 players now.
The server program will give you warning errors about not being able to "remove" the file though, but it appears to work just fine.

Also when I see 24 REAL people in the game then I will believe for my own eyes that you can change the player limits via a ini/cfg file. Normally the player caps is hard coded into the game dll or the linux .so bin file. ALL other games are like this. Could this mean that we had with V1.0 of airborne that all we had to do is change a setting or 2 in a .ini file to up the player cap limit. Dont know but since I messed up my install time to play around since this .ini tweak is out.
And yes I can hax the TF2 dll and give yourself 32 slots on a tf2 server. Havent messed with the .so yet. Hell I can give anyone a 64 slot TF2 server by haxing the dll/.so file. Im just trying to prove a point that the player caps are normally hard coded. There hasnt been one other game that has been put out that you can mess with the player cap limits, RO didnt allow this, we had to wait for a patch to up the limits above 32. It uses the UR2.5 engine.
But yes reports are that Airborne can handle 16 players now. Now its time for me to uninstall airborne and then reinstall v1.0 and do some testing/playing around. Time to dig even further into the files to see if this can be done on the listen server.
Just have to wait and see what comes out and to actually see the actual player counts on the servers. As my link above stated, 16 players is the max. So if anyone can confirm that you can actually go higher with real players in the server then please do post it.
EDIT:

So you call this a dedicated server? I'm sorry but that's just a joke!
I'll look to post some more specifics when I get over the disappointment but for starters try:-
1. Its not a standalone dedicated server hence requires 8.5GB of client data to be uploaded.
2. It doesn't appear to have the concept of:
2.1. Configuration directory
2.2. Configurable server port's
2.3. Configurable bind IP
2.4. Redirect support
3. Requires the config under My Documents
4. Requires a client user name and password
5. No documentation on query protocol
6. No documentation of required ports
7. No documentation on rcon protocol
8. Rcon application connects but the commands take minutes to be processed
9. Rcon sends the password in plain text
I wasn't expecting 100% functionality but as it stands this is useless from a GSP perspective. What a real shame!!
Wait, the next 24 hours will bring out alot in this new patch. The forums will be chocked full of what is this and that. Why is this and so forth.
Rcon is sending the password in plain-text, like WTF is that all about.
EDIT 2:
Now for the interesting part...

That right there tells me that the player caps are so hard coded into the game. Its the game engine itself that is trying to FORCE a 12 player cap on the game. Why else would it change the the player cap setting back to 12 unless you do the read only trick on the ini file. Also if you could actually change the limits above 12 then why is it when I go to input 16, 20, 24 or what ever, any number higher than 12 the ded server console will NOT ACCEPT IT. yes you have to do the ini trick to get it higher than 12. Try it and see what happens when you try to go above 12. See .................

One of my clannies is running a 64 slot home dedi server and its showing as that too lol, seems that ini file will show what ever you tell it too in the DSLauncher
My thing is can you actually get more than 12 players in the server. We need about 24 players to meet up and get on a test/home/whatever server
Ok it would seem that 16 is the very max you can have. If I try to go on a server with 15 players, fine I can get in. But if I try to get on a 24 slot server with 16 players on it already I can't get in.
Keeps poping up you have lost connection with the server.

My testing has confirmed your statement above Wizz. Nothing higher than 16 players for me either. Lots of servers with far more slots, but the most players on any server was 16.
