The error I got was I must have the game updated to install the server. I figured that meant we are still SOL on a real dedicated server...
The readme confirms it. Gotta install the game first.
This readme reads like the original one we saw. I'll post the whole thing.

Medal Of Honor Airborne Dedicated Server as well as information about

TABLE OF CONTENTS

I. System Requirements

III. Remote Server Setup
IV. Running The Server
V. Administrating Remotely
VI. Server Commands

VIII. Credits

I. System Requirements
================================================== =========================

The following items are required to run a Medal Of Honor Airborne
dedicated server:

1. A broadband Internet connection or LAN connection.
2. A system that meets or exceeds the minimum system requirements
for the game (no graphics card required).
3. The game successfully installed on the target computer.

II. Local Server Setup
================================================== =========================

To set up a server locally or remotely using VNC, follow these steps:

1. Run the dedicated server launcher (DSLauncher.exe)
2. In the 'Basic' tab, enter the username and password you registered
with EA. (If you have not created an account: run the game, in the
main menu choose 'Multiplayer', and click 'Create Account').
3. In the 'Miscellaneous' tab, enter the port you wish to run your
server on as well as the password to administrate it remotely.
4. In the 'Map Rotation' tab, add at least one map to your rotation
by selecting the map name and pressing the 'Add' button.
5. Configure any other options you wish to set.
6. Save your config file using File>Save to the default MOHA config
folder: "My Documents\EA Games\Medal of Honor Airborne(tm)\Config".

You can open and save multiple dedicated server configurations. The
configuration that is currently open is the one that will be
launched.

NOTE: The first time you run the launcher, it should generate two
config files: MOHAGameTypes.ini and MOHAMaps.ini in the MOHA config
folder. These files are necessary for the dedicated server to run
properly and should only be modified by advanced users.

III. Remote Server Setup
================================================== =========================

To set up a server remotely (where you do not have physical access to
the computer or VNC), follow these steps:

1. Run the dedicated server launcher (DSLauncher.exe) locally.
6. Save your config file using File>Save.
7. Copy your saved config file (MOHADedicatedServer.ini by default),
MOHAGameTypes.ini and MOHAMaps.ini (which can be found in your
MOHA config folder) to the target computer's MOHA config folder:
"My Documents\EA Games\Medal of Honor Airborne(tm)\Config".

IV. Running The Server
================================================== =========================

To run the server locally:

1. Follow the instructions in "II. Local Server Setup".
2. Run the dedicated server launcher (DSLauncher.exe).
3. Open the config file you want to run if it is not already open.
4. Press the 'Launch!' button.

To run the server remotely:

1. Follow the instructions in "III. Remote Server Setup".
2. Run MOHAServer.exe with the config file as a parameter:
MOHAServer.exe <config file name>
e.g. MOHAServer.exe MyDedicatedServer.ini

If you run MOHAServer.exe without any parameters, it will attempt to
load the default config name: MOHADedicatedServer.ini.

V. Administrating Remotely
================================================== =========================

Once connected, the dedicated server remote (DSRemote.exe) looks and
functions identically to the dedicated server.

To connect to a dedicated server remotely:

1. Run DSRemote.exe.
2. Enter the host name (IP address) of the server.
3. Enter the server's port and password as specified in the config file.
4. If successful, the login dialog should disappear and "Remote
connection accepted" will be printed.

If you receive the "Connection failed." message, the host name or
port number was invalid. You may receive this message even with
correct values if the dedicated server has not yet initialized.

If you receive the "Login failed." message, the connection was
successful but your password was invalid.

VII. Uploading Server to Another Machine
================================================== =========================

1) Make sure you have the game, patch and dedicated server installed on local machine
2) Upload everything in your Program Files/Electronic Arts/Medal of Honor Airborne directory to anywhere on target machine.
3) Copy Microsoft Visual Studio libraries installer (Redistributable/vcredist_x86.exe on your MOHA DVD) to the target machine and install it.
4) Locate and run DSLauncher.exe from UnrealEngine/Binaries folder.

1-yes you have to install the whole thing...then the patch, then the dedicated server files.
2-no you don't have to buy an additional copy for your server. You just have to put your existing ea account info into the config file according to the readme.

The following items are required to run a Medal Of Honor Airborne
dedicated server:

1. A broadband Internet connection or LAN connection.
2. A system that meets or exceeds the minimum system requirements
for the game (no graphics card required).
3. The game successfully installed on the target computer.

SO...
Since you need a hot ticket card to "successfully install" the game, how can you have no graphics card required?

Hopefully they did fix it. I don't have a server to test on :(

One of the PMOH forum members has discovered how to increase the player count on the dedicated server in Medal of Honor: Airborne.

"I already figured out how to get more players! Looks like the dedicated server app only allows you to do 12 players, but if you change it in the . ini file, it works. I tried 24 and it shows up on the server list! I wonder how many you can get up to. All you need to do is change the Maxplayercap and the maxplayers in the deedicated server .ini file."

this seems to be verified to work, just need servers up to hard test it.

The zip package is still on our plate, but I didn't want to hold off on releasing this to get that done. It's still going to be a big file either way, frankly, that's just how Unreal is. I believe UT2003 was something like a 4 Gb upload.

That said, we've already got something like 15 Ded Servers up in the half hour since we released, so it doesn't seem like people are having too much trouble getting them going.

So you need to have the game installed.

Guys,

I gave the game another try with the patch. Played all this afternoon. I am just an average gamer, but MP is still buggy, and it is like playing on a console. Was bored way too quickly. I'm out. Lost all my interest. Now looking to COD 4 SP demo next week, but MOHA is Pacific Assault all over again. I have already listed my copy of MOHA on Ebay, starting bid: .99 cents.

Thanks for all the great info the past few weeks regarding the progress of the MOHA patch, and I love the sight Rudedog.

I do have to agree with you on most part i am stil playing mohaa spearhead everyday and my servers are probably one of the few Freezetag servers out there that stil have a full server on 12 hours a day each day .

and i played today on dedicated servers for Airborne but got bored reason is pretty simple the new maps are basicly crap and the remade maps are okay.

my point is i have more fun playing on my own server playing freeZetag on a 28 slot server with everything working as it should then playing on Airborne servers playing the maps that dont play as nice as on the spearhead server.

anyways that was just my point of view.night all.:D

i wonder how many of them 15 are on home connections and not on dedicated server boxes?

so what if UT was 4gb, its is over double the size, i think EA are missing the point
why couldnt they do a standalone dedi server like they did with BF2

anyone know the billing address at EA so i can send them my bandwidth bill + my time for uploading the whole game to my dedi?

i remeber BH sayin sumthin about the scoreboard in relation to over 12 players and the ingame rewards being a prob on servers above 12 player, its around somewhere.

Why didn't they just turn off the rewards then? Yeah, it's a cool idea, but if it limits how many people can play, so-long to that feature! It should have gone the wayside with botched/flared/smooth landings.

Perhaps that is the very problem, that this is their best effort.

I have not wanted to say it before now but I have sure been thinking it and this patch seems to reinforce that notion.

LOL ROFL

Now onto the dev's. I have no idea or what but it sure seems that the dev's didnt know how to do up this game properly on the UE3 engine. I to this day can not understand on why halfway thru the dev cycle did they swap the game engines.

Suicide if you ask me and right now it is showing big time on the amature design and coding that went into this.

Is anyone home at EA or what. You would have thought that after the pounding they got from Pacific Insult that they would put out a Stillborne ermmm aka Airborne game that actually was a PC game.

Ohhhhh sorry folks its a console game and console game only.

Blackhat made an interesting statement a few days ago. It was in that thread where a dude hurled out personal insults at him. The statement he made was something to the effect of "I am fighting for what you want out of this game". Who's he fighting with? He must be referring to some internal strife at the office? Why would he have to "fight" for what we want out of the game? It's obvious that he wasn't and isn't listened to over at the office. And from what I can make of the fighting comment, he encounters alot of resistance from the suits regarding the direction of the game. I'll bet you that in private he cusses their asses just like we do. He just can't do it in public.

People can say what they want but IMHO this game is dead. The gameplay just sucks that bad. That can't be fixed in a patch. I think this is the first and only patch that you'll see for this game. I've unistalled it and won't reinstall. I'd like to get a refund from EA but they won't do it so I'm stuck. Shame on me. The release now, patch later BS needs to stop. This is the worst instance of that I've ever seen. I'ts EA games' loss. I only lost $50 (which pisses me off) but they have lost the confidence and respect of most of the PC gaming community. How much is that worth?

rant over.

kOrN out!

So based on all of this one would say, Don't Buy This Product, Still Needs Work and Patching! No?

Yes, I am afraid so. This game needs more dev work and its def not ready for prime time.

If for some odd reason they dont put out a very big patch fixing alot more of the stupid things I dont forsee this game going very far especially with all the other new games coming out.

I can see alot of gamers just getting fustrated with it and moving on.

It is not something I would recommend but be honest to my clanmates about it we have some diehard mohaa players on our clan that want to see it work but with CoD4 coming I see my guys all going that route IF its any good. If not we will be playing in the CAL league of Tetris.

Found this post over at EA forums.
Hopefully EA will continue patching this game until all issues are thoroughly fixed - both player side and dedicated server.

> Can we please have an update as to
> where they are on the fixes?

I'm hoping to have more updates for you guys soon. I've been in all sorts of conversations and meetings with producers, engineers, technical directors, QA, etc. We're working on more fixes and plans for ongoing fixes, and I'll communicate those to you guys as soon as they're more concrete.
