Yep, me too, same message. My ban list and names list is pretty long as well. I've transferred my ban list to "ban.txt" that comes with the patch, though. I'm more concerned about having 10 "Unknown Soldiers"...annoys the hell out of me that people can't NAME themselves.

are you guys adding just the names to the banned text file, or the IPS as well??

thanks

I'm only using the IPs. Frankly, I'm not sure of the format of ban.txt, so I don't know if it will work this way. I only wanted to try *some* level of protection, now that AK isn't working. I'm researching the ban.txt format now, and will post the results...unless someone else knows already?

Oops, re-read the readme that came with the patch, and the new "banUser" and "banClient" commands, as well as the "unBan" refer to NAMES, not IPs. Gonna change my ban.txt, but keep on researching.

Well, hell, one more Oops  ...I never learn...RTFM. I looked in the IW commands list (the new one with the 1.2 commands added), and it refers to GUID as the content of ban.txt. Since all I have (from AK) are names and IPs, I'm not sure what to do...wait for the updated AK, I guess, or some sort of central GUID repository?

sheesh! it sure did get complicated. :?

I could be wrong, but I believe that the GUID is the best way to ban. I believe you get the GUID from the persons CD KEY, so no matter if they switch their name or change their ip somehow, they will always be banned. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

You're not wrong (IMHO), BUT, Heinz is correct...its become very complex. I believe I heard that the reason AutoKick isn't working (with 1.2) is that it can't parse GUIDs (as yet). You now longer have a "client number" and "name" ban capability. the new ban.txt uses GUIDs...how the heck do we see them...unless, of course, you interactively monitor your server, real-time, 24x7. I actually have a day job... We all need some measure of automation.

You do have automation. It's in the ban.txt. As long as autokick doenst work. forget about it until it does along with your current ban list for it. If someone comes into your server and they start acting up, any one of your server admins can ben them for a certain amount of time.. it makes it really easy to not have multiple people running a tool.. its open to any admin. If the folks you had banned have learned they will come in and behave themselves.. if not..they will come in and cause problems and be permenently banned anyway and their bans will be automated from that point unless you unban them. I personally used autokick as well and loved it, but this works too. Also there are lots of other admin tools that do work with 1.2.

Not to toot our own horn, but you could take a look at Game Server Admin (GSA) version 1.2. It works well with CoD 1.2, although it still useses IP addresses to manage banning. The next version of GSA (1.3) will use either the IP address, or GUID to manage banning, and should be out in two to three weeks.

You can get it it on CoDAdmin, or from http://www.wizardsofwar.com

Let us know if you take a look and have any problems, or questions.

Momma...not sure I call that automation. I can't afford to watch the server 24x7, nor do any of my other annointed admins. I do, however, agree that the GUID and ban.txt can be great, if we have some way of distributing, sharing, or importing GUIDs.

Johnstud...I have put GSA on my server...its working quite well, and look forward to the GUID enhancement. All we need now is an anti-cheat feeder (of GUIDs) of some sort, or, as I said, above, some method of sharing or publishing. Thx for the good work. I even monitor my server from work...shhh...

I have considered adding this to GSA for a while. If an admin bans a player for cheating(not breaking server rules), that it would get reported to a central repository. If more that 2 different servers reported a user as cheating, they would get published, and GSA would update its ban list automatically.

The reason I have not implemented it (its already coded) is the pending PunkBuster support (which does that). And the whole issue of trusting other game admins to "do the right thing".

I pride myself in being very cautious about banning players. I will give all players the benefit of the doubt (our 2 servers only have 3 players that have banned for cheating, while we have 20+ players banned for breaking server rules), as I myself am accused of cheating from time to time. Getting accused of cheating when you don't is a compliment most of the time.

The fear is that somehow GSA could cause a player to get banned from playing on the estimated 750+ servers that use GSA, wrongfully.

If it’s a feature that I should turn on, then let me know...

Johnstud,

I agree with your premise that a "do the right thing" approach is appropriate. I have banned only 2 players on my server...one for repeatedly breaking server rules (which I would *not* want published, even though he/she was a slimeball), and one whose IP address I acquired here on CODADMIN as a flagrant (many, many times) cheater....documentary proff was available. So, I, too, am very careful.

My server is small, with several (somewhat) loyal players. I frequently get cheaters (I think), but have not banned, nor have they been back. A word from me, and they back off. My problem is, as is everyone's, that I can't monitor 24x7. I need something, obviously, that can pick up on the cheats and kick/ban on the fly. (the good news is that I've lost a lot of the 'cowboys' by installing PRM). PunkBuster is a ways out, I think, and it would be nice to have something in the interim. CI was great with MOH.

Oh, well...

2 weeks past the release of the patch , still no upgrade for autokick and autokick 2 has been talked about for a year now and still no final word. Auto kick forums speak for themselves(very dead)
