Our clan presently has a 20 slot public server which we rent from k-play.
A friend has offered us a linux server with 100Gb traffic/month for 39 euros.
Questions.
1. Is 100Gb/month enough for at least a 20 slot public server which is online 24/7 and presently is full every night for at least 8 hours.
2. How easy is it to set up and maintain your own server.

Thanks in advance.

You can make it fit the 100gb limit with the maxrate setting, however it may degrade the quality of play.

It also depends on how he measures traffic. Some companies give you 100gb in/100gb out while others charge your for combined in/out.

I currently run a 24 slot public thats full ~12-16 hrs a day (rate setting of 15000) and will probably use ~300gb this month. I do run another private server and website off that same machine, so figure probably 250gb for the public server alone.

*note, my figures are in IN+OUT since thats how my provider charges.

lowering the maxrate wont degrade the quality of play
what it will do is level that playing field
if you force all too have the same rate then your games are much fairer for all
you get a few players with real low pings and they will rule the server
i run maxrate at 3000 too 5000 so all can enjoy the game
all anyone has too do is set there on maxrate too what ever the server they are playing on too match it
it will hold down the lag on your machine-- so flame away people but i have run these all through rtcw et and now cod also the quake games

In the harbor w/ 24 people, a 5000 setting would be horrendus. Use /cg_lagometer 1 to tweak yours to your liking. If you're getting too many yellow lines on the bottom graph, you're hitting the maxrate setting.

Are you talking about dialup or broadband?
