View Full Version : Damage and realism mods, a FAQ I'm sure.

I've noticed that most realism mods out there don't actually set the damage the same on weapons that, in real life, would inflict exactly the same damage. For example, the Springfield, Garand, and BAR all fire a 150 gr round @ 2800 fps so they should do exactly the same damage.
Is this done to add balance to the play? Higher damage is given to the scoped rifles. Is this b/c they have lower rates of fire? Lower damage is usually set for the BAR. Is this b/c of its high rate of fire?
I'm just one of those "real life" realism freaks, I guess. I'm not complaining, realism is THE BEST thing that's happened to MoH and CoD. Just curious.

well first off yes mostly its done for balance but
just because you got the same round dosnt mean it has the same load me and my dad both load our 30.06 with a different amount of powder im not sure what the grainage was for the bar and garand ammo but im taking a huge guess that it wasnt quite as much as youd load a modern day hunting rifle with or the springfield
i know my rifle kicks like a mother ! and id have to imagine that it was prolly a lighter load for the bar and garand like i said just a guess but if my rifle was semi auto id shoot about 15 shots and call it a day lol
and yeah i think the snipers should be the same as the non scoped conter part at least :P but some one wont give me da satisfaction

M2 Ball/AP etc. was the same load for every weapon. Same for BAR, Garand, 1903, M1917 Enfield, 1919A4 MG, 1917 MG. No reason not to do it that way. Otherwise the logistics would be a nightmare. Your zeros would off if you choose the wrong "type" and production speed would suffer if you made specific ones. I shoot my Garand and my Springfield 1903A4 will and will shoot it in my BAR when it gets here.

It is done for "play balance" but any decent realism mod is going to make the same or similar bullet with the same or similar velocity do the same damage. I have an in house mod running on my servers that does this.
You will also note that the same weapon with a scope does more damage in the game and the same weapon set to a lower rate of fire does more damage bashing. The only reason I can think that they would have done this is to promote the use of the alternate settings by giving them a bonus. I set them all back to where they are supposed to be and made weapon damages as historicaly accurate as possible in a game. That means however that some weapons are a bit out of balance but that's the nature of this game. If it were supposed to be balanced there would be no advantage to any weapon in any given circumstance. I think the advantage is knowing when a certain weapon is appropriate for the given circumstance.

Well said. That's what I did on my little server. I figure anything called realism should be just that.
Hey, have you found any historical references to number of grenades the average guy carried? I found one that was for the 101st on D-Day but that only refers to jump load so it's pretty high.
